Using information from published articles, databases, and recent samples from the Brazilian coastal zone, a list of parasites of haemulid (grunts) fish known from the Neotropical and Nearctic regions was structured. A total of 231 species of parasites were listed totaling 775 records involving 48 hosts, distributed in 86 localities of the American Continent. Records were listed with information on hosts, habitat, distribution and new findings; a host-parasite list is also included herein.

The sugarcane pre-sprouted plantlets (PSP) production system is an innovative method to enhance crop multiplication rates. This system is greenhouse-grown, where correct irrigation management is essential to maintain the production quality. The purpose of this study was to determine the water requirement of three cultivars (CTC9005HP, RB966928, and SP87365) of pre-sprouted sugarcane plantlets, in which crop evapotranspiration (ETc) is a function of the product of the crop coefficient (Kc) and reference ...

Abstract Background Immune responses to sandfly saliva have been shown to protect animals against Leishmania infection. Yet very little is known about the molecular characteristics of salivary proteins from different sandflies, particularly from vectors transmitting visceral leishmaniasis, the fatal form of the disease. Further knowledge of the repertoire of these salivary proteins will give us insights into the molecular evolution of these proteins and will help us select relevant antigens for ...

Abstract Individuals exposed to sand fly bites develop humoral and cellular immune responses to sand fly salivary proteins. Moreover, cellular immunity to saliva or distinct salivary proteins protects against leishmaniasis in various animal models. In Tbilisi, Georgia, an endemic area for visceral leishmaniasis (VL), sand flies are abundant for a short period of ≤3 months. Here, we demonstrate that humans and dogs residing in Tbilisi have little immunological memory to saliva of P. kandelakii , the ...

The objective of this study is to verify the hydrodynamic similarity between two scales of a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) reactor using computational fluid dynamics. Glicksman’s full and simplified sets of scaling parameters were used to build two 1:4 reduced models for a CFB reactor. The model was validated against experimental results of the 3rd NETL/PSRI Challenge for fluidized beds. To exploit the hydrodynamic similarity between the two scales, dimensionless vertical pressure drop profile, ...

Mapping refined burned areas (BA) in the Brazilian Amazon is still a challenge. The main difficulty of BA detection in large areas is the presence of cloud cover and water bodies. The use of different data sources of medium spatial resolution satellite images can provide a higher availability of cloud-free images. Besides that, it may decrease the uncertainties associated with coarse spatial resolution data (>250m), which can under or overestimate BA and hinder the detection of small BA patches (<0.1km²). ...

Dichelyne (Cucullanellus) tornquisti n. sp. is described from the intestine of the marine fish Orthopristis ruber (Haemulidae) of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The new species differs from the congeners by the location of the deirids (same level) and the excretory pore (posterior) in relation to esophagus-intestinal junction and by papillae 5 to 9 not forming a subventral line. It is the first Dichelyne species described from fish family Haemulidae in the Brazilian coastal zone.

Leishmania donovani parasites are the cause of visceral leishmaniasis and are transmitted by bites from phlebotomine sand flies. A prominent feature of vector-transmitted Leishmania is the persistence of neutrophils at bite sites, where they protect captured parasites, leading to enhanced disease. Here, we demonstrate that gut microbes from the sand fly are egested into host skin alongside Leishmania parasites. The egested microbes trigger the inflammasome, leading to a rapid production of interleukin- ...

Apart from a single report, the last publication of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) in Mali dates back more than 20 years.
