Background Nerve reconstruction following lower-extremity nerve injuries usually leads to worse outcomes in comparison with upper-extremity injuries due to the long distances of nerve regeneration. This study was performed to consider the clinical application of distal nerve transfer for the treatment of long gaps of the tibial nerve (TN) and in established compartment syndrome. It aimed to determine the anatomic suitability of transferring the sural nerve (SN) in combination with the superficial ...

This is a multicenter prospective observational study that included a large cohort (n = 397) of allogeneic (allo-HSCT; (n = 311) and autologous (ASCT) hematopoietic stem cell transplant (n = 86) recipients who were monitored for antibody detection within 3-6 weeks after complete severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccination from February 1, 2021, to July 20, 2021. Most patients (n = 387, 97.4%) received mRNA-based vaccines. Most of the recipients (93%) were vaccinated more than 1 year ...

This article describes the initial development stages of a structural window frame system for the in-plane seismic strengthening of load-bearing masonry wall buildings. The solution implemented ultimately aims to stiffen (and strengthen) the opening such that the wall would behave as if there were no opening. This is achieved by installing a structural steel window frame composed of a profile forming a closed ring inside the opening, properly tied to the surrounding masonry wall. The strengthening ...

We study whether female-headed local governments in Spain are more likely to engage in gender sensitive policies such as long-term care support, pre-schooling, or work and family-life balancing services. Using a fuzzy regression discontinuity design estimated on the set of mixed electoral races, we find no evidence of female mayors being more likely to implement these policies at the local level. We do find evidence of differences between parties in the probability of implementing these policies, ...

Bitcoin is a peer-to-peer electronic currency system which has increased in popularity in recent years, having a market capitalization of billions of dollars. Due to the alleged anonymity of the Bitcoin ecosystem, it has attracted the attention of criminals. Mixing services are intended to provide further anonymity to the Bitcoin network, making it impossible to link the sender of some money with the receiver. These services can be used for money laundering or to finance terrorist groups without ...

Graph-based data representations are an important research topic due to the suitability of this kind of data structure to model entities and the complex relations among them. In computer vision, graphs have been used to model images in order to add some high level information (relations) to the low-level representation of individual parts. How to deal with these representations for specific tasks is not easy due to the complexity of the data structure itself. In this paper we propose to use a graph ...

This paper presents a new algorithm for fingerprint indexing, which is based on minutia triplets, and it is very tolerant to missing and spurious minutiae. In this sense, a novel representation for fingerprints is proposed by defining a triangle set based on extensions of Delaunay triangulations. Moreover, a set of robust features is used to build indices. Finally, a recovery method based on calculating the recommendation score is introduced, using a new similarity function between geometric transformations. ...

The use of approximate graph matching for frequent subgraph mining has been identified in different applications as a need. To meet this need, several algorithms have been developed, but there are applications where it has not been used yet, for example image classification. In this paper, a new algorithm for mining frequent connected subgraphs over undirected and labeled graph collections VEAM (Vertex and Edge Approximate graph Miner) is presented. Slight variations of the data, keeping the topology ...

In this paper, a new algorithm for mining frequent connected subgraphs called gRed (graph Candidate Reduction Miner) is presented. This algorithm is based on the gSpan algorithm proposed by Yan and Jan. In this method, the mining process is optimized introducing new heuristics to reduce the number of candidates. The performance of gRed is compared against two of the most popular and efficient algorithms available in the literature (gSpan and Gaston). The experimentation on real world databases shows ...

The identification of fingerprints and palmprints is considered a challenging research line in Biometrics. Nowadays, the accuracy of these techniques highly depends on the quality of the involved impressions, specially if the matching is performed in latent cases. In the present work, a new algorithm that reports a high accuracy in both cases is presented. This proposal requires a minimum amount of manually marked information in latent impressions and deals successfully with problems of missing ...

This paper introduces a novel approach for building heterogeneous ensembles based on genetic programming (GP). Ensemble learning is a paradigm that aims at combining individual classifier's outputs to improve their performance. Commonly, classifiers outputs are combined by a weighted sum or a voting strategy. However, linear fusion functions may not effectively exploit individual models' redundancy and diversity. In this research, a GP-based approach to learn fusion functions that combine classifiers ...

In human breast cancer, β-catenin localization has been related with disease prognosis. Since HER2-positive patients are an important subgroup, and that in breast cancer cells a direct interaction of β-catenin/HER2 has been reported, in the present study we have explored whether β-catenin location is related with the disease survival. The study was performed in a tumor bank from patients (n = 140) that did not receive specific anti-HER2 therapy. The proteins were detected by immunohistochemistry in ...

SARS-CoV-2 is the virus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic. The acute infection is characterised not only by respiratory symptoms, but also by multiple systemic manifestations, including neurological symptoms. Among these, headache is a frequent complaint. As the pandemic progresses and the population of patients recovering from COVID-19 grows, it is becoming apparent that the headache present in the acute stage of the infection may persist for an indeterminate period, becoming a major problem ...

The Wittig-Horner reaction is carried out using three different activated barium hydroxide catalysts: C-O, C-200, and C-300. These catalysts have different microcrystalline structures and basic and redox properties. The influence of these properties on acrylate yields is discussed. The process is a surface reaction and not a true phase transfer catalytic process. This is proved by the IR spectra of the adsorbed ylids on the surface of the catalyst and by the polymer-supported reagant. A mechanism ...

In recent years, frequent approximate subgraph (FAS) mining has been used for image classification. However, using FASs leads to a high dimensional representation. In order to solve this problem, in this paper, we propose using emerging patterns for reducing the dimensionality of the image representation in this approach. Using our proposal, a dimensionality reduction over 50% of the original patterns is achieved, additionally, better classification results are obtained.

In this work we present a Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) growth method to obtain graphene on noble metals using evaporation of carbon atoms from a carbon solid-source in ultra-high vacuum conditions. We have synthesized graphene (G) on different metal surfaces: from a well studied substrate as platinum, to a substrate where it can only be formed using innovative methods, as is the case of gold. For the characterization of the graphene layers we have used in situ surface science techniques as low energy ...

This unique “bias selective” feature of the deposition system allowed the deposition of silver with the substrates at ground and avoided ...

Into the data mining field, frequent approximate subgraph (FAS) mining has become an important technique with a broad spectrum of real-life applications. This fact is because several real-life phenomena can be modeled by graphs. In the literature, several algorithms have been reported for mining frequent approximate patterns on simple-graph collections; however, there are applications where more complex data structures, as multi-graphs, are needed for modeling the problem. But to the best of our ...

Abstract A perhydro‐1,3‐benzoxazine behaves as an excellent chiral ligand in the nucleophilic addition of alkynylzinc derivatives, prepared from terminal alkynes and dimethylzinc, to α‐keto esters without using other Lewis acids. The enantioselectivity is excellent and homogeneous for a wide variety of aromatic and heteroaromatic α‐keto esters. Aliphatic enolizable α‐keto esters were alkynylated with moderate enantioselection.
