In the human, hepatic steatosis can be associated with an imbalance between synthesis, secretion and storage of hepatic lipids, and exhibits a genetic susceptibility. The effect of overfeeding on hepatic lipid channelling was investigated in two genotypes of ducks that differ in their susceptibility to fatty liver, i.e. the common duck, Anas platyrhynchos, and the Muscovy duck, Cairina moschata. Before overfeeeding, the Muscovy duck exhibited a lower subcutaneous adiposity and a higher muscular ...

Abstract In 1989 and 1990, the contamination rate of the European pine weevil Hylobius abietis (L.) by several pathogenic fungi for the Scots pine was measured [ Leptographium procerum (Kendrick) Wingf. — 45% of the specimens; Pachnodium canum (Upadh. and Kendr.) — 14%; or Ophiostoma piliferum (Fries) H. and P. Syd — 3% (Piou 1993)]. To understand the processes of transportation, a detailed study was conducted by scanning electron microscopy. Several types of spores vectored are found mainly in the thoracic ...

The dorso-abdominal scent glands of Lincus spurcus (Heteroptera : Pentatomidae) were studied in adults and 5th-instar nymphs. The structure was described by electron microscopy and the volatile fraction was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. There is a strong correlation between the structural state and the secretory activity. In nymphs, the 1st pair is not very active, while the 2nd and the 3rd pairs are well-developed and possess abundant secretions. On the contrary, in adults, only ...

Abstract 1. Genetically lean (LL) or fat (FL) male chickens were exposed to either high (32°C) or control (22°C) ambient temperature up to 9 weeks of age. They were fed on one of two isoenergetic diets differing in protein content: 190 or 230 g/kg. 2. At 22°C, weight gain of LL broilers was the same as in FL chickens, but at the high temperature LL birds grew to a greater weight than FL ones. 3. Food conversion efficiency was not affected by ambient temperature in LL chickens but was depressed in FL ...

The respective effects of ambient temperature, dietary crude protein and feed intake were investigated in finishing chickens and the consequence of protein supplementation under high tem- perature conditions was analysed in particular.Heat-related reduction in growth was associated with decreased nitrogen retention (-30 or -35 % according to the diet), which could not be explained by the observed lower feed intake alone.Tissue samples performed in 5-to 6-week-old chicks showed varying effects of heat ...

Effect of high ambient temperature (32 versus 22 C) on dietary ME value was investigated in 32 genetically lean and fat 8-wk-old male chickens. Lean broilers exhibited higher AME and TME values than fat chickens. Hot climatic conditions significantly increased AME and TME values, particularly in leaner birds. Protein retention efficiency was enhanced by selection for leanness and increased with ambient temperature. Correction for nitrogen balance (AMEn and TMEn) reduced the effect of temperature but ...

Abstract A multi-particulate fixed-dose combination product, consisting of a combination of two alkalising salts formulated as prolonged-release granules, ADV7103, was developed to obtain a sustained and prolonged alkalising effect. The specific release of both types of granules was shown in vitro through their dissolution profiles, which indicated that potassium citrate was released within the first 2–3 h and potassium bicarbonate up to 10–12 h after administration. The long-lasting coverage of ...

Abstract 1. Energy balance of adult hens divergently selected for high (R + ) or low (R- ) residual food consumption was investigated using indirect calorimetry. Three experiments were conducted: feeding behaviour of individual hens, hens having free access to food or fasting and hens tube-fed at 70, 100 or 130% of the control intake of both lines. 2. R + hens ate significantly more than R- (+ 48%). This difference was maximum at the onset of the light (+ 120%) and not significant during the rest of the light period. ...

The present study was performed in order to investigate the effect of chronic heat exposure (32 degrees, constant) on growth, body composition and energy retention of broiler chickens in relation to age. At 2 and 4 weeks of age, fifty-four male Shaver broiler chickens were allocated to three treatments according to the following design: 22 degrees, ad lib. feeding (22AL); 32 degrees, ad lib. feeding (32AL); and 22 degrees, pair-feeding with the 32 degrees group (22PF). Ambient temperature was kept constant ...

The effect of chronic heat exposure on carcass quality of broilers: proportion of lean and fat tissues, fat content, and fatty acid composition, was investigated. One hundred and eight 4-wk-old male chickens were brooded in individual battery cages in two controlled-environment rooms at constant ambient temperature (22 or 32 C) until 7 wk of age. They were equally distributed into three treatments: 22 C, ad libitum feeding (22AL); 32 C, ad libitum feeding (32AL); and 22 C, pair-feeding on the daily ...
