Galectins-1 and -3 regulate epithelial proliferation/apoptosis and neutrophil activation, and are implicated in lung cancer and asthma. The role of galectins in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), characterised by epithelial changes and neutrophil infiltration, remains unknown. In the present study, galectin-1 and -3 expression was assessed by immunohistology in the bronchial epithelium of lung specimens from eight severe COPD patients and compared with nine nonsmokers and six smokers without ...

We report the case of a 32-year-old man with portal hypertension without cirrhosis due to chronic vitamin A intoxication. Portal hypertension revealed by oesophageal varice rupture progressively worsened and ascites occurred 5 years after the patient stopped vitamin A intake. Initially, serum retinyl palmitate concentration was increased whereas serum retinol concentration was normal. There was no hepatic fibrosis on light microscopic examination of liver biopsy specimens. Five years after the patient ...

Background Allergy afflicts one third of children, negatively impacting their quality of life and generating a significant socio-economic burden. To this day, this disorder remains difficult to diagnose early in young patients, with no predictive test available. Objective This study was designed to correlate cytokine profiles with clinical phenotypes of allergy development. Methods Three hundred patients were recruited and followed from birth to 18 months of age. They were given a clinical exam ...

According to clinical trials, the treatment of patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC) with second-generation direct acting antiviral agents (DAAs) is highly efficient and well tolerated. The goal of this study was to investigate the effectiveness and safety of various combinations of these drugs during their first 2 years of use in the real-world practice of French general hospitals. Data from patients treated with all-oral DAAs in 24 French non-academic hospital centers from March 1, 2014 to January ...

Data on the efficacy and tolerance of interferon-free treatment in chronic hepatitis C (CHC) in elderly patients are limited in phase II-III trials. A prospective cohort of adult patients with CHC treated in French general hospitals. Data from 1,123 patients, distributed into four age groups, were analyzed. Of these, 278 were > 64 years old (fourth quartile) and 133 were > 73 years old (tenth decile). Elderly patients weighed less, were more frequently treatment-experienced women infected with genotype ...
