Swallowing is a complex sequence of highly regulated and coordinated skeletal and smooth muscle activity. Previous studies have attempted to determine the temporal relationship between the muscles to establish the activation sequence pattern, assessing functional muscle coordination with cross-correlation or coherence, which is seriously impaired by volume conduction. In the present work, we used conditional Granger causality from surface electromyography signals to analyse the directed functional ...

This work is focused in the study of the oil yield extraction from castor seed using three different seed states called: whole, broken and bare endosperm. Taguchi design was used to determine the contribution of the followed parameters: seed state, amount of seed in the extractor, temperature and pressure. It was proved that it is necessary to introduce the whole seed and that the pericarp forms paths that increase the yield extraction. The contribution of the control factors has a yield extraction ...

In Colombia, the national biofuels policy made it possible to create the ethanol and biodiesel industries around the sugar and palm sectors, respectively. These production chains have generated a direct interaction between biofuels and the agri-food industry. Thus, this paper seeks to analyze whether the national biofuels policy allowed a reconfiguration of the production dynamics of both the sugar and palm sectors in Colombia, in the period 2008–2018. The analysis methodology used is based on the ...

Disease manifestation after infection with cutaneous Leishmania species is the result of a complex interplay of diverse factors, including the immune status of the host, the infecting parasite species, or the parasite load at the lesion site. Understanding how these factors impact on the pathology of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) may provide new targets to manage the infection and improve clinical outcome. We quantified the relative expression of 170 genes involved in a diverse range of biological ...

Introduction: Portugal took early action to control the COVID-19 epidemic, initiating lockdown measures on March 16th when it recorded only 62 cases of COVID-19 per million inhabitants and reported no deaths. The Portuguese public complied quickly, reducing their overall mobility by 80%. The aim of this study was to estimate the initial impact of the lockdown in Portugal in terms of the reduction of the burden on the healthcare system.Material and Methods: We forecasted epidemic curves for: Cases, ...

The swallowing process involves complex muscle coordination mechanisms, whose alterations are known as dysphagia. Its instrumental diagnosis is performed by invasive and expensive methods. The surface electromyography (sEMG) emerges as an alternative for automated and objective evaluations of dysphagia symptoms. Two new urea-bipyridine derived bridged organosilanes (P5 and P6) have been synthesized and their hydrolysis–condensation under nucleophilic catalysis in the presence of Eu3+ salts led to luminescent bridged silsesquioxanes (M5-Eu and M6-Eu). An important loading of Eu3+ (up to 11%w) can be obtained for the material based on the 6,6′-isomer. Indeed the photoluminescence properties of these materials, that have been investigated in depth (photoluminescence (PL), quantum yield, lifetimes), show a significantly ...

Crack- and defect-free thin films (∼50 nm) of optical quality were successfully deposited on glass substrates by spin-coating after optimizing the spinning rate and solvent system. In this paper we describe a multiagent crime simulation model that resorts to concepts of self-organizing bio-inspired systems, in particular, of the Ant Colony Optimization algorithm. As the matching between simulated and real crime data distributions depends upon the tuning of some control parameters of the simulation model (in particular, of the initial places where criminals start out), we have modeled the calibration of the simulation as an optimization problem. The solution for the allocation ...

This study uses microeconomic data from the transportation systems of land cargo in Colombia: rail and trucking, to determine their degree of allocative efficiency through the non-parametric method Data Envelopment Analysis DEA. The average overall efficiency found was 74.4% for trains and 20.56% for trucks. These figures indicate that rail is more efficient in the allocation of resources. This means that trains in Colombia use their input better than trucks to maximize their production, given the ...
