We report results based on mid-infrared photometry of 5 active main belt objects (AMBOs) detected by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) spacecraft. Four of these bodies, P/2010 R2 (La Sagra), 133P/Elst-Pizarro, (596) Scheila, and 176P/LINEAR, showed no signs of activity at the time of the observations, allowing the WISE detections to place firm constraints on their diameters and albedos. Geometric albedos were in the range of a few percent, and on the order of other measured comet nuclei. ...

We aimed to evaluate the orofacial antinociceptive effect of geraniol in mice and its molecular anchorage mechanism. Seven mice per group (probabilistic sample) were treated with geraniol (12.5, 25 and 50 mg/kg, i.p.), morphine (6 mg/kg, i.p.) and vehicle (saline + Tween 80 at 0.2%, i.p.) 30 minutes prior to the beginning of the experiment. Injecting glutamate (25 μM), capsaicin (2.5 μg) and formalin (2%) into the right upper lip (perinasal) of the mouse induced nociception. Behavioral analysis of the animals ...

Current surgical treatments for osteochondral (OC) lesions of the talus typically result in a suboptimal fibrous/fibrocartilaginous repair tissue and in not-convincing clinical long-term results. Tissue-engineering strategies have the potential to overcome this limitation. These techniques are based on the use of a biomaterial that supports tissue growth, called “scaffold,” in both cell-free and cell-based approaches. Cell-free scaffolds have already entered clinical practice, but only short-term ...

Background and AimsIn rain forests, sapling survival is highly dependent on the regulation of trunk slenderness (height/diameter ratio): shade-intolerant species have to grow in height as fast as possible to reach the canopy but also have to withstand mechanical loadings (wind and their own weight) to avoid buckling. Recent studies suggest that mechanosensing is essential to control tree dimensions and stability-related morphogenesis. Differences in species slenderness have been observed among rainforest ...

Core transport of intrinsic carbon and lithium impurities is analysed in H-mode discharges in NSTX. The application of lithium coatings on graphite plasma-facing components led to high-performance H-mode discharges with edge localized mode (ELM) suppression and resulted in core carbon accumulation. Lithium ions did not accumulate and had densities less than 1% of carbon densities. Core transport codes NCLASS, NEO and MIST are used to assess the impact of lithium evaporative coatings on impurity transport. ...

Abstract One of the versions of the plasma–metal inert gas (MIG) process is basically a combination of a plasma arc with a MIG/metal active gas (MAG) arc in a single torch. With this association, the advantages of each arc are combined. The main characteristic of this is the independence between the heat input by the process and the deposited material, resulting in greater facility to control bead weld geometry. In the current literature, there is a shortage of information related to the process, ...

In order to produce welds that comply with the geometric specifications of a project, it is vital to properly control the weld pool. The 'Plasma-MIG' process using concentric arcs has been posited as an innovative alternative in this regard. Therefore, the aim of this study was to expand on the research related to the effect of current swings between the consumable electrode and the outer arc, the tilt angle of the torch and the distance between the torch and the part on the performance of the process. ...

Anthropic activities impact ecosystems worldwide thus contributing to the rapid erosion of biodiversity. The failure of traditional strategies targeting single species highlighted ecosystems as the most suitable scale to plan biodiversity management. Network analysis represents an ideal tool to model interactions in ecosystems and centrality indices have been extensively applied to quantify the structural and functional importance of species in food webs. However, many network studies fail in deciphering ...

We summarize the state of the art of a program of UV observations from space of meteor phenomena, a secondary objective of the JEM-EUSO international collaboration. Our preliminary analysis indicates that JEM-EUSO, taking advantage of its large FOV and good sensitivity, should be able to detect meteors down to absolute magnitude close to 7. This means that JEM-EUSO should be able to record a statistically significant flux of meteors, including both sporadic ones, and events produced by different ...

The Serra da Calçada Mountain (Minas Gerais State, Brazil) hosts a natural grassland with high biodiversity and endemism, locally known as campo rupestre, which grows over hematite and quartzite outcrops, protecting several headwaters. However, this mountain has been severely threatened by anthropogenic fires and its restoration has been challenged by the lack of knowledge on the effect of fire on plant species and soil fertility. Thus, this study aimed to assess a burned campo rupestre site after ...
