On 24 August 2008, an outbreak alert regarding cases of acute gastroenteritis in Podgorica triggered investigations to guide control measures. From 23 August to 7 September, 1699 cases were reported in Podgorica (population 136 000) and we estimated the total size of the outbreak to be 10 000-15 000 corresponding to an attack rate of approximately 10%. We conducted an age- and neighbourhood-matched case-control study, microbiologically analysed faecal and municipal water samples and assessed the ...

Abstract Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder caused by the deposition of abnormal proteins in neurons of the basal ganglia that limit motor ability, resulting in disability and reduced quality of life. So far, no pharmacologic therapy has been developed, and the treatment remains symptomatic. The aim of the present study is to perform a systematic investigation of the literature, and to determine the types and effects of rehabilitative interventions used ...

Facial aging results from reduced biosynthetic activity of dermal fibroblasts and decreased deposition of extracellular matrix components, such as hyaluronic acid, a glycosaminoglycan responsible for skin hydration and turgidity. Exogenous hyaluronic acid injections provide a safe though short-term solution for facial rejuvenation. Using a rabbit model, the authors investigated residence time and tolerability of ACP gel, a new hyaluronic acid cross-linked derivative, compared with high-molecular- ...

Summary Anellovirus is a recently created, floating genus of viruses. Torque teno virus (TTV), the type species in the genus, was first discovered in a human patient with a post‐transfusion hepatitis of unknown aetiology. Recently, TTV genetically related to but distinct from those discovered in humans have also been found in animals, including pigs. The aims of this study were to estimate the prevalence of swine TTV in Italian pig herds and some risk factors possibly associated with this infection. ...

Spasticity is a common disabling disorder in adult subjects suffering from stroke, brain injury, multiple sclerosis (MS) and spinal cord injury (SCI). Spasticity may be a disabling symptom in people during rehabilitation and botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) has become the first-line therapy for the local form. High BTX-A doses are often used in clinical practice. Advantages and limitations are debated and the evidence is unclear. Therefore, we analysed the efficacy, safety and evidence for BTX-A high ...

Twenty-four patients (47 eyes) affected by Graves’ disease were enrolled to evaluate the role of standardized echography, pattern electroretinogram (P-ERG), visual evoked potentials (P-VEPs) and automated perimetry in the early diagnosis of the compressive optic neuropathy (CON). The P-ERG amplitude reduction was the most sensitive parameter to demonstrate an early impairment of the optic nerve (ON) function. We found a significant negative correlation between the ON diameter and the P-ERG amplitude. ...

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) causes acute hepatitis in humans, and infects several animal species, mostly asymptomatically. Swine and human HEV strains are genetically related suggesting both a zoonotic and a possible foodborne transmission. The prevalence of swine HEV was investigated in 274 randomly selected pigs from six different swine farms of Northern Italy, testing viral RNA in stools by nested reverse-transcription-polymerase chain reaction. HEV genome was detected in 115 stools (42%). All farms ...

CIPNM can occur in ICU subjects with severe acquired brain injury (sABI), but no data have been reported regarding their outcome. The aim of the present study was to investigate the functional recovery in subjects suffering from both CIPNM and sABI and whether they had poorer outcome than those with sABI only.Prospective cohort study. ...

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is the causative agent of Hepatitis E. Swine and human HEV strains are genetically related, suggesting the occurrence of zoonotic transmission. Recently, in Japan, cases of food-borne HEV transmission have been described in people after consuming raw or undercooked meat from wild boars or pigs. Although, swine HEV strains have been detected in pig herds in many European countries, only minimal information is presently available about the circulation and the prevalence of HEV ...

This study described a SARS-CoV-2 infection in minks on an Italian farm. Surveillance was performed based on clinical examination and a collection of 1879 swabs and 74 sera from dead and live animals. The farm was placed under surveillance for 4.5 months, from the end of July 2020, when a man working on the farm tested positive by RT-PCR, till mid-December 2020 when all the animals were sacrificed. Clinical examination revealed no clinical signs or increased mortality rates attributable to SARS- ...
