The classical coating flow problem of determining the asymptotic film thickness (and hence the load) on a flat plate being withdrawn vertically from an infinitely deep bath is examined via a numerical solution of the steady-state Navier-Stokes equations. Under creeping flow conditions, the dimensionless load q is computed as a function of the capillary number Ca and, for Ca<0.4, is found to agree with Wilson’s extension [J. Eng. Math. 16, 209 (1982)] of Levich’s well-known expression. On the ...

The roles of particle-wall and particle-particle interactions are examined for suspensions of spherical particles in a viscous fluid being confined and sheared at low Reynolds numbers by two parallel walls moving with equal but opposite velocities. Both particle-wall and particle-particle interactions are shown to decrease the rotational velocity of the spheres, so that in the limit of vanishingly small gaps between the spheres and the walls, the spheres acquire a rotational slip relative to the ...

We report the discovery of a new class of an electric field-driven bulk phase transition due solely to dipolar interactions in a suspension under the action of a uniform ac field where the effects of other competing forces are suppressed. This transition appears after the well-known chain-column formation and causes the uniform suspension of columns to rearrange into a cellular pattern consisting of particle-free domains surrounded by particle-rich walls. Interestingly, the characteristic size of ...

We present a novel separation device for the front-end of a biodetection system to discriminate between biological and non-biological analytes captured in air samples. By combining AC dielectrophoresis along the flow streamlines and a field-induced phase-separation, the device utilizes “dielectrophoretic gating”to separate analytes suspended in a flowing fluid based on their intrinsic polarizability properties. The gates are integrated into batch fabricated self-sealed surface-micromachined fluid ...

Experiments were conducted on concentrated suspensions of neutrally buoyant particles which exhibit negative dielectrophoresis. We found that, due to interparticle electrical interactions, such suspensions undergo a phase separation when subjected to a high-gradient ac field (approximately kV/mm) and form a propagating distinct front between the regions enriched with and depleted of particles. A generalization of our theory for the thermodynamics of the field-induced phase transitions in suspensions ...

It has recently been reported that an initially uniform suspension of neutrally buoyant particles within a partially filled horizontal rotating cylinder can, under certain conditions, segregate into bands of particles separated by regions of low particle concentration or even particle-free liquid [M. Tirumkudulu, A. Mileo, and A. Acrivos, Phys. Fluids 12, 1615 (2000)]. An explanation for this phenomenon is proposed on the basis of a model of rimming flows with an axially varying viscosity plus the ...

Molecular dynamics simulations are used to study the behavior of closely-fitting spherical and ellipsoidal particles moving through a fluid-filled cylinder at nanometer scales. The particle, the cylinder wall and the fluid solvent are all treated as atomic systems, and special attention is given to the effects of varying the wetting properties of the fluid. Although the modification of the solid-fluid interaction leads to significant changes in the microstructure of the fluid, its transport properties ...

The velocity fluctuations present in macroscopically homogeneous suspensions of neutrally buoyant non-Brownian spheres undergoing simple shear flow, and their dependence on the microstructure developed by the suspensions, are investigated in the limit of vanishingly small Reynolds numbers using Stokesian dynamics simulations. We show that, in the dilute limit, the standard deviation of the velocity fluctuations (the so-called suspension temperature) is proportional to the volume fraction, in both ...

We studied, experimentally and theoretically the motion and segregation of positively polarized particles flowing through dielectrophoretic microfluidics. The batch fabrication technique which we present enables one to construct an apparatus featuring a large number of mechanically robust and chemically inert microdevices having a very low ratio of dielectrophoretic-to-fluid residence time. Several apparatuses of this type can easily be integrated into a higher-level system able to handle flow rates ...

Experiments were performed on dilute suspensions of polarized particles in microfluidics with electrodes of different sizes arranged parallel and perpendicular to the flow. We identified the conditions under which the interparticle electric interactions do not affect the particle trapping in the high-field strength regions. In particular, there exists a lower bound on the scale of the microelectrodes, below which the expected improvement in positioning the particles in the preselected locations ...

Experiments were conducted in microfluidics equipped with dielectrophoretic gates arranged perpendicular to the flow. Under the action of a high-gradient ac field and shear, flowing suspensions were found to undergo a phase separation and to form a distinct front between the regions enriched with and depleted of particles. We demonstrate that this many-body phenomenon, which originates from interparticle electrical interactions, provides a method for concentrating particles in focused regions and ...

Experiments were conducted in a parallel-plate channel in which an extremely dilute suspension of heavy, positively polarized spheres was exposed to an ac electric field under conditions such that the field lines were arranged in the channel cross section perpendicular to the streamlines of the main flow. To reduce the effects of the gravitational settling of the particles, the channel was slowly rotated around a horizontal axis. Following the application of a high-gradient strong ac field (∼ several ...

Using molecular dynamics simulations, we study the motion of a closely fitting nanometer-size solid sphere in a fluid-filled cylindrical nanochannel at low Reynolds numbers. At early times, when the particle is close to the middle of the tube, its velocity is in agreement with continuum calculations, despite large thermal fluctuations. At later times, partially wetting fluids exhibit novel adsorption phenomena: the sphere meanders away from the center of the tube and adsorbs onto the wall, and subsequently ...

The dynamics of macroscopically homogeneous sheared suspensions of neutrally buoyant, non-Brownian spheres is investigated in the limit of vanishingly small Reynolds numbers using Stokesian dynamics. We show that the complex dynamics of sheared suspensions can be characterized as a chaotic motion in phase space and determine the dependence of the largest Lyapunov exponent on the volume fraction ϕ. We also offer evidence that the chaotic motion is responsible for the loss of memory in the evolution ...
