Abstract The NF-κB activation pathway induced by T cell costimulation uses various molecules including Vav1 and protein kinase C (PKC)θ. Because Vav1 inducibly associates with further proteins including phospholipase C (PLC)γ1 and Src homology 2 domain-containing leukocyte phosphoprotein of 76 kDa (SLP-76), we investigated their role for NF-κB activation in Jurkat leukemia T cell lines deficient for expression of these two proteins. Cells lacking SLP-76 or PLCγ1 failed to activate NF-κB in response ...

Significance Gains of the MYC gene are the most common imbalances in cancer and are associated with poor prognosis, particularly in B-cell lymphoma. Recent advances in DNA sequencing have revealed the existence of thousands of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) with unknown functional relevance. We have here identified a MYC-regulated lncRNA that we named MYC-induced long noncoding RNA (MINCR) that has a strong correlation with MYC expression in cancer. We show that MINCR is functional and controls cell ...

The extreme ultraviolet beamline BW3 at Hasylab is a state of the art beamline for the energy range 15–2000 eV consisting of a triple undulator equipped with a modified high-flux SX-700 plane grating monochromator. The first three optical elements of the beamline are made of graphite coated with SiC to withstand the high heat load at the 4.5 GeV storage ring Doris III. Excellent spectral resolution of the order of 104 at the nitrogen K edge at 400 eV is obtained by replacing the elliptical focusing ...

Abstract Genetic factors contribute to the overall risk of developing nicotine addiction, which is the major cause of preventable deaths in western countries. However, knowledge regarding specific polymorphisms influencing smoking phenotypes remains scarce. In the present study we provide evidence that a common single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the 5′ untranslated region of CHRM2 , the gene coding for the muscarinic acetylcholine receptor 2 is associated with nicotine addiction. CHRM2 was defined ...

Objective To assess whether breastmilk feeding is associated with a reduced risk of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). Secondary outcome measures analyzed were retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Study design In an ongoing multicenter cohort study, the data of 1433 very low birth weight infants born before 32 weeks of gestation and discharged in 2013 were analyzed. We compared growth and neonatal complications of infants who received breastmilk exclusively (N = 223) with ...

Background Primary mediastinal large B-cell lymphoma is a rare lymphoma accounting for no more than 3% of all B-cell lymphomas in children and adolescents. However, patients in this young age group with this lymphoma have the shortest event-free survival of patients with any B-cell lymphoma under current standard chemotherapy protocols. Lymphomas with features intermediate between primary mediastinal large B-cell lymphoma and classical Hodgkin's lymphoma (mediastinal gray zone lymphomas) have been ...

Abstract Copy number changes in TOP2A have frequently been linked to ERBB2 (HER2) amplified breast cancers. To study this relationship, copy number changes of ERBB2 and TOP2A were investigated by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) in two cell lines; one characterized by having amplification of both genes and the other by having amplification of ERBB2 and deletion of TOP2A. The characteristics are compared to findings on paired ERBB2 and TOP2A data from 649 patients with invasive breast cancer ...

Summary: A total of 13 species of lithotrophic ammonia-oxidizing bacteria assigned to the genus Nitrosomonas were characterized. DNA homologies, G + C content of the DNA, shape and ultrastructure of the cells, salt requirements, ammonia tolerance, utilization of urea as ammonia source, and whole-cell protein patterns were analysed. In addition to the described species Nitrosomonas europaea and ?Nitrosomonas cryotolerans? eight new species are established. The names Nitrosomonas communis sp. nov., Nitrosomonas ...

Abstract Functional perfusion imaging with a separate labeling coil located above the common carotid artery was demonstrated in human volunteers at 3 T. A helmet resonator and a spin‐echo echo‐planar imaging (EPI) sequence were used for imaging, and a circular surface coil of 6 cm i.d. was employed for labeling. The subjects performed a finger‐tapping task. Signal differences between the condition of finger tapping and the resting state were between −0.5% and −1.1 % among the subjects. This study was conducted to compare the accuracy of clinic blood pressure (CBP) and telemedical home blood pressure (HBP) measurement in the diagnosis of hypertension in primary care. The study subjects were 411 patients with average CBP > or =140 mmHg systolic or > or =90 mmHg diastolic, who performed telemedical HBP measurement (5 days, four times daily) and ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) monitoring in random order. Main outcome measure was the agreement of CBP and HBP with daytime ABP. CBP was much higher ...

Lymphotoxin signaling via the lymphotoxin-beta receptor (LTbetaR) has been implicated in biological processes ranging from development of secondary lymphoid organs, maintenance of spleen architecture, host defense against pathogens, autoimmunity, and lipid homeostasis. The major transcription factor that is activated by LTbetaR crosslinking is NF-kappaB. Two signaling pathways have been described, the classical inhibitor of NF-kappaB alpha (IkappaBalpha)-regulated and the alternative p100-regulated ...

The southern Brazilian shelf (SBS) is a region influenced by fresh water. The initial deposition of suspended sediments carried by this fresh water presents important ecological consequences for the area. The aim of this study was to investigate the contribution of the Patos Lagoon coastal plume to the deposition pattern observed along the inner continental shelf by providing estimates of estuarine‐shelf suspended sediment exchange. The study was carried out through three‐dimensional numeric modeling ...

Chromosome band 9p24 is frequently amplified in primary mediastinal B cell lymphoma (PMBL) and Hodgkin lymphoma (HL). To identify oncogenes in this amplicon, we screened an RNA interference library targeting amplicon genes and thereby identified JAK2 and the histone demethylase JMJD2C as essential genes in these lymphomas. Inhibition of JAK2 and JMJD2C cooperated in killing these lymphomas by decreasing tyrosine 41 phosphorylation and increasing lysine 9 trimethylation of histone H3, promoting heterochromatin ...
