Abstract Streamflow time series in arid and semi‐arid regions can be characterized as a sequence of single discrete flow episodes or clusters of hydrographs separated by periods of zero discharge. Here, two point process models are presented for the joint occurrence of flow events at neighbouring river sites. The first allows for excess clustering by adding autocorrelated errors to an empirically derived seasonally varying probability of an event and is extended to the case of the joint occurrence ...

One possible cause of patellofemoral pain syndrome is excessive lateral force acting on the patella. Although several treatment methods focus on decreasing the lateral force acting on the patella, the relationship between the lateral force and the patellofemoral contact pressure distribution is unclear. A computational model has been developed to determine how loading variations alter the patellofemoral force and pressure distributions for individual knees. The model allows variation in the quadriceps ...

The role of the glutathione peroxidase/reductase (GSH-Px/GSSG-Rd) enzyme system in protection from paracetamol toxicity was investigated in isolated mouse hepatocytes in primary culture. The effect of inhibitors of these enzymes on the toxicity of paracetamol and on t-butylhydroperoxide (t-BOOH), used as a positive control, was determined. 1,3-Bis(chloroethyl)-1-nitrosourea (BCNU) was used to inhibit GSSG-Rd, and goldthioglucose (GTG) used to inhibit GSH-Px. Both these inhibitors increased cell membrane ...

Matthew W. Adamson, Andrew Morozov,

It is well recognized that models in the life sciences can be sensitive to small variations in their model functions, a phenomenon known as ‘structural sensitivity’. Conventionally, modellers test for sensitivity by varying parameters for a specific formulation of the model functions, but models can show structural sensitivity to the choice of functional representations used: a particularly concerning problem when system processes are too complex, or insufficiently understood, to theoretically justify ...

The effect of acetaminophen (APAP) exposure on the formation of oxidized glutathione (GSSG) was investigated in cultured mouse hepatocytes to determine if oxidative damage is involved in the toxicity of this drug. Incubations of hepatocytes for 24 hr with 1 mM APAP produced a time-dependent loss of cell viability which was preceded by depletion of reduced glutathione (GSH) and an increase in GSSG formation. Pretreatment with 1,3-bis(chloroethyl)-1-nitrosourea (BCNU) (0.1 mM) for 30 min, which irreversibly ...

Abstract Background: It is widely stated that stroke is the most common cause of severe disability. We aimed to examine whether this claim is supported by any evidence. Methods: We conducted secondary analysis of the Office of National Statistics 1996 Survey of Disability, United Kingdom. This was a multistage stratified random sample of 8683 noninstitutionalized individuals aged between 16 and 101 years, mean 62 years, response rate 83% (n = 8816). The outcome used was the Office of Population Censuses and ...

To analyze the association of polymorphisms in the tau gene with pathologically confirmed corticobasal degeneration (CBD).The authors previously described an extended tau haplotype (H1) that covers the human tau gene and is associated with the development of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). The authors now extend this analysis to CBD, a neurodegenerative condition with clinical and neuropathologic similarities to PSP. Like PSP, CBD is associated with accumulation of aggregates containing the 4- ...
