The use of DNA sequence data has played a key role in these discoveries, but it also presents a new challenge in that the taxonomic treatments of new species often lag behind the publication of phylogenies that include such undescribed taxa. For example, in their proposal for the tapeworm order Rhinebothriidea, Healy et al. ( 2009) presented a phylogenetic hypothesis that included a total of 36 rhinebothriidean species, 27 of which were new to science, as well as four clades considered to represent ...

Chad R. Johnson, Brian D. Kangas, Emily M. Jutkiewicz, Jack Bergman, Andrew Coop,

There is substantial evidence that cholinergic system function impairment plays a significant role in many central nervous system (CNS) disorders. During the past three decades, muscarinic receptors (mAChRs) have been implicated in various pathologies and have been prominent targets of drug-design efforts. However, due to the high sequence homology of the orthosteric binding site, many drug candidates resulted in limited clinical success. Although several advances in treating peripheral pathologies ...

Zinette Bergman, Manfred Max Bergman, Andrew Thatcher,

Most studies on sustainable mobility focus on technological, socio-structural, or psychosocial influences, while neglecting individual motivations and practices. In this study, we examine mobility motivations and practices as part of a complex interplay between psychosocial and socio-structural dimensions within the mobility infrastructure of Metrorail in the Western Cape. Drawing on Albert Bandura's theory of personal agency and the model of triadic reciprocal causation, we interviewed 38 (mean ...

We recently defined event‐free survival at 24 months (EFS24) as a clinically relevant outcome for patients with DLBCL. Patients who fail EFS24 have very poor overall survival, while those who achieve EFS24 have a subsequent overall survival equivalent to that of the age‐ and sex‐matched general population. Here, we develop and validate a clinical risk calculator (IPI24) for EFS24. Model building was performed on a discovery dataset of 1,348 patients with DLBCL and treated with anthracycline‐based ...

Early complement components are important for normal antibody responses. In this process, complement receptors 1 and 2 (CR1/2), expressed on B cells and follicular dendritic cells (FDCs) in mice, play a central role. Complement-activating IgM administered with the antigen it is specific for, enhances the antibody response to this antigen. Here, bone marrow chimeras between Cr2−/− and wildtype mice were used to analyze whether FDCs or B cells must express CR1/2 for antibody responses to sheep erythrocytes ( ...

Patients with disorders of coagulation and bleeding can be among the most challenging surgical patients to manage. Intraoperative or postoperative bleeding can contribute to life-threatening complications in even the most “benign” surgical procedures. An adequate number and function of platelets play a critical role in the coagulation pathway. A thorough understanding of platelet physiology and platelet disorders is therefore essential in the management of the thrombocytopathic oral and maxillofacial ...

The purpose of the present investigation was to describe spatiotemporal brain activation profiles during word reading using magnetic source imaging (MSI). Ten right-handed dyslexic children with severe phonological decoding problems and eight age-matched non-impaired readers were tested in two recognition tasks, one involving spoken and the other printed words. Dyslexic children's activation profiles during the printed word recognition task consistently featured activation of the left basal temporal ...

Freshwater biodiversity is in a state of crisis. The recent development of a global emergency recovery plan to “bend the curve” for freshwater biodiversity lacks the necessary details for implementation in a regional context. Using Canada as an example, we describe a toolbox intended to equip decision-makers and practitioners with evidence-based tools for addressing threats to freshwater biodiversity. The toolbox includes two rubric-based scoring tools to inform users about the level of the reliability ( ...

Resonant Raman scattering in wurtzite structured GaN nanocrystallites of various morphologies were studied. The polar mode A1(LO) exhibited Fröhlich-type resonant Raman scattering whose characteristics were found to depend weakly on the morphology of the crystallites. In contrast, the UV-laser heating and heat retention in the porous media of a crystallite ensemble were discovered to drastically modify the Raman properties: A Raman thermal redshift was observed that might mask any redshift due to ...
