A general third-quantized framework for a system of interacting universes is described. The third-quantized fields create and annihilate second-quantized single-universe states, and are equivalent to second-quantized spacetime coupling constants. This implies that the spacetime couplings obey dynamical equations. A direct consequence of this is that the spacetime coupling constants are in general subject to uncertainty relations. A concrete illustration of these facts is given using the semiclassical ...

We consider a system comprised of an axion (described by a rank-three antisymmetric tensor field strength) coupled to gravity. Instantons are found which describe the nucleation of a Planck-sized baby Robertson-Walker universe. Information loss to the baby universe can lead to an effective loss of quantum coherence. An estimate of the magnitude of this effect on particle propagation is made in the semi-classical approximation. This magnitude depends on the parameters of the theory (which includes ...

The wave function of an interacting 'family' of one large 'parent' and many Planck-sized 'baby' universes is computed in a semiclassical approximation using an adaptation of Hartle-Hawking initial conditions. A recently discovered gravitational instanton which exists for general relativity coupled to axions is employed. The outcome of a single experiment in the parent universe is in general described by a mixed state, even if the initial state is pure. However, a sequence of measurements rapidly collapses ...

Particle scattering and radiation by a magnetically charged, dilatonic black hole is investigated near the external limit at which the mass is a constant times the charge. Near this limit a neighborhood of the horizon of the black hole is closely approximated by a trivial product of a two-dimensional black hole with a sphere. This is shown to imply that the scattering of long-wavelength particles can be described by a (previously analyzed) two-dimensional effective field theory, and is related to ...

Pair production of Reissner-Nordstr\"om black holes in a magnetic field can be described by a Euclidean instanton. It is shown that the instanton amplitude contains an explicit factor of ${e}^{\frac{A}{4}}$, where $A$ is the area of the event horizon. This is consistent with the hypothesis that ${e}^{\frac{A}{4}}$ measures the number of black hole states.

Action research (AR) is promoted for health care development. A systematic review was undertaken to gain insight into the uptake and designs of practice-based AR. Empirical research papers from 2000 to 2005 were extracted from CINAHL, MEDLINE and British Nursing Index, and two specialist AR journals. The initial search identified 335 papers: 38% were AR (20% were phenomenology; 32% ethnography; 10% randomised-controlled trials). Further filtering produced 62 AR papers for detailed analysis. Quantization of two-dimensional dilaton gravity coupled to conformal matter is investigated. Working in conformal gauge about a fixed background metric, the theory may be viewed as a sigma model whose target space is parameterized by the dilaton $\phi$ and conformal factor $\rho$. A precise connection is given between the constraint that the theory be independent of the background metric and conformal invariance of the resulting sigma model. Although the action is renormalizable, new coupling constants ...

Casein kinase 1δ (CK1δ) family members associate with microtubule-organizing centers (MTOCs) from yeast to humans, but their mitotic roles and targets have yet to be identified. We show here that budding yeast CK1δ, Hrr25, is a γ-tubulin small complex (γTuSC) binding factor. Moreover, Hrr25's association with γTuSC depends on its kinase activity and its noncatalytic central domain. Loss of Hrr25 kinase activity resulted in assembly of unusually long cytoplasmic microtubules and defects in spindle positioning, ...
