Samantha Saul, Andrew Dekker, C. Gordon Watson,

This is a report of a 22-year-old woman with treated anorexia nervosa who died of complications of acute gastric dilatation-that is, infarction and perforation with severe and irreversible shock. Binge eating and drinking, precipitated by emotional crises, contributed to her acute gastric dilatation. This complication of anorexia nervosa has been previously reported, but, unlike the others, this case ended fatally. The literature is reviewed.

A second autonomous replicon of P307, RepFIB, has been isolated that has significant homology with other replicons in IncFI group plasmids. Eleven homologous repeats of 21 base pairs are present on the sequence and flank an open reading frame capable of coding for a protein of about Mr = 40,000. This protein was identified by maxicell analysis of cloned RepFIB. A series of deletion mutations of RepFIB were inserted into a DNA polymerase I-dependent vector and examined for their replication proficiency ...

Abstract Background Despite improvements in outcomes after completion of the Fontan circulation, long-term functional state varies. We sought to identify pre- and postoperative characteristics associated with overall function. Methods and Results We analyzed data from 476 survivors with the Fontan circulation enrolled in the Pediatric Heart Network Fontan Cross-sectional Study. Mean age at creation of the Fontan circulation was 3.4 plus or minus 2.1 years, with a range from 0.7 to 17.5 years, and ...

A project funded by UKWIR is under way in the UK to develop a relatively simple methodology whereby the effects of the introduction of extended in-sewer storage at CSOs on downstream sewerage and treatment can be assessed. Recent legislation (UK and European) has compelled many sewer system operators to introduce systems which increase in-sewer retention times, and also retain more flow and load within sewer networks. The project has reviewed existing knowledge about the interaction between in-sewer ...

Severe asthma is a debilitating, life-threatening disease associated with substantial global morbidity, mortality, and health care resource utilization. Patients may not receive guideline-directed medical care for severe asthma. Moreover, viable precision-based assessment tools and newer preventive therapies that can reduce the frequency of exacerbations and associated functional impact are underused. As a result, high rates of poorly controlled severe asthma persist, and patient health-related ...

Recent studies suggest that climate change is causing rising solute concentrations in mountain lakes and streams. These changes may be more pronounced in mineralized watersheds due to the sensitivity of sulfide weathering to changes in subsurface oxygen transport. Specific causal mechanisms linking climate change and accelerated weathering rates have been proposed, but in general remain entirely hypothetical. For mineralized watersheds, a favored hypothesis is that falling water tables caused by ...

The use of computational fluid dynamics-based techniques for predicting the gross solids and finely suspended solids separation performance of structures within urban drainage systems is becoming well established. This paper compares the result of simulated flow patterns and gross solids separation predictions with field measurements made in a full size storage chamber. Human allergen-induced rhinitis is associated with the recruitment and activation of inflammatory cells, particularly eosinophils and CD4(+) T cells, in the nasal mucosa. Chemokines are inflammatory mediators capable of attracting specific inflammatory cell populations. Monocyte chemotactic proteins (MCPs), a subfamily of CC chemokines, have been shown to induce chemotactic activity particularly in eosinophils, T cells, and monocytes under in vitro assay conditions. To assess the contribution of MCPs ...
