The isothermal and chimeric primer-initiated amplification of nucleic acids (ICAN) is a new isothermal DNA amplification method composed of exo Bca DNA polymerase, RNaseH and DNA-RNA chimeric primers. We detected invA of Salmonella from chicken carcasses, egg yolk and cattle fecal samples. Fifty-three of 59 isolates were invA-positive in ICAN-chromatostrip detection. The result was consistent with those obtained by standard PCR. Salmonella invA was detected in 12 of 14 carcass rinses by ICAN, while ...

Poor quality complementary foods with low nutrient density and inappropriate feeding practices have been identified among the major causes of malnutrition in young children. In many developing countries, complementary foods are introduced too early or too late and the quality and quantity of the foods are insufficient, leading to a great risk of nutritional deficiencies during the second half of infancy. Most of the habitually used complementary foods in developing countries are unfortified cerealbased ...

Summary Objective Parental HIV infection may affect even those exposed children who remain uninfected. We investigated early growth, an indicator of overall health, of infants born to Zambian mothers recruited for a study of breastfeeding and postpartum health. Methods HIV‐infected and uninfected women in Lusaka were followed regularly from late pregnancy to 16 weeks postpartum. Infant weight and length were measured at birth, 6 and 16 weeks. Infant HIV status could not be specifically determined ...

Abstract The effects of α‐amylase treatment on physical properties, acceptability to mothers, and cost of roasted and extruded maize–beans–groundnuts–bambaranuts complementary porridge recipes were assessed prior to their industrial production. Storage stability of the extruded α‐amylase‐treated fortified blend was assessed at 2 weeks and 6 months by sensory evaluation, peroxide value, water activity and microbiological load. The use of α‐amylase at 0.04% w/w enhanced porridge acceptability and ...

Abstract Objective To investigate the effects on maternal micronutrient status and infant growth of the increased maize prices that resulted from the southern African drought of 2001–2002. Design Longitudinal cohort study. Setting A maternal and child health clinic in Lusaka, Zambia. Subjects Maternal and infant health and nutrition data and maternal plasma were being collected for a study of breast-feeding and postpartum health. Samples and data were analysed according to whether they were collected ...

African swine fever (ASF) is a contagious haemorrhagic disease associated with causing heavy economic losses to the swine industry in many African countries. In 2017, Zambia experienced ASF outbreaks in Mbala District (Northern province) and for the first time in Isoka and Chinsali districts (Muchinga province). Meanwhile, another outbreak was observed in Chipata District (Eastern province). Genetic analysis of part of the B646L gene, E183L gene, CP204L gene and the central variable region of the B602L ...

In a longitudinal cohort study we investigated factors contributing to breast milk HIV RNA viral load among lactating women in Lusaka, Zambia. Detailed data from 135 HIV-infected women were collected by questionnaires concerning postpartum maternal and infant health and infant feeding practice. Maternal blood was collected during pregnancy and at 6 weeks postpartum. Milk samples collected from each breast at 10 days and 6 weeks postpartum plus a subset collected at other time points were analyzed ...

Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) is optimal for infant health and is associated with decreased risk of mother-to-child HIV transmission compared with mixed feeding of breast milk and other foods. To investigate why many women stop EBF before the recommended 6 months, maternal and infant health and infant-feeding data were collected from 177 HIV-infected and 177-uninfected Zambian women regularly from 34 weeks gestation to 16 weeks postpartum. Despite strong support for good breastfeeding practice, only ...

Summary Subclinical mastitis, defined as raised milk sodium/potassium (Na/K) ratio, is associated with poor infant growth and, among HIV‐infected women, with increased milk HIV viral load. We conducted a longitudinal cohort study in Lusaka, Zambia, in order to investigate the relative importance of several potential causes of subclinical mastitis: maternal infection, micronutrient deficiencies and poor lactation practice. Women (198 HIV‐infected, 189 HIV‐uninfected) were recruited at 34 weeks’ gestation ...

Background: Malnutrition in late infancy in developing countries may result from poor-quality complementary foods that displace breast milk. Objective: The objective of the study was to assess the effects of fortified complementary blends of different energy densities on growth, hemoglobin concentrations, and breast milk intake of 9-mo-old Zambian infants. Design: Infants were randomly assigned at 6 mo of age to receive for 3 mo a fortified blend of maize, beans, bambaranuts, and groundnuts [Chilenje ...

We detected West Nile virus (WNV) nucleic acid in crocodiles (Crocodylus niloticus) in Zambia. Phylogenetically, the virus belonged to lineage 1a, which is predominant in the Northern Hemisphere. These data provide evidence that WNV is circulating in crocodiles in Africa and increases the risk for animal and human transmission.

Bluetongue (BT) is an arthropod-borne viral disease of ruminants with serious trade and socio-economic implications. Although the disease has been reported in a number of countries in sub-Saharan Africa, there is currently no information on circulating serotypes and disease distribution in Zambia. Following surveillance for BT in domestic and wild ruminants in Zambia, BT virus (BTV) nucleic acid and antibodies were detected in eight of the 10 provinces of the country. About 40% (87/215) of pooled blood ...
