A diverse collection of 700 bacteria obtained from an operational phenolic remediating industrial treatment plant was made to select potential strains as microbial biosensors. Pseudomonads were the most abundant group, of which 48 selected from the liquor or suspended solids were assessed for their physiological response to phenolic pollutant loading and niche specialisation. By FAME-MIS identification the Pseudomonads were clustered into six major species groups. Those isolates able to utilise ...

A suite of ecologically relevant, site-specific bioreporters was constructed by transposon mutagenesis of microorganisms isolated from a polluted phenolic-remediating wastewater treatment system. Four Pseudomonad species were engineered to carry a stable chromosomal copy of the lux operon (luxCDABE) derived from Photorhabdus luminescens. These recombinant reporter microorganisms were tested for bioluminescence response to relevant phenol concentrations in the laboratory and to phenolic-containing ...

The use of scouting and economic thresholds has not been accepted as readily for managing weeds as it has been for insects, but the economic threshold concept is the basis of most weed management decision models available to growers. A World Wide Web survey was conducted to investigate perceptions of weed science professionals regarding the value of these models. Over half of the 56 respondents were involved in model development or support, and 82% thought that decision models could be beneficial ...

Submarine channels are not stand-alone systems. They are long-lived systems modified by imperceptibly slow processes and rapid gravity flows, in some part controlled by hinterland dynamics. The submarine Zambezi Channel, within the Mozambique Channel, receives sediment from the Zambezi River catchment which has a dynamic tectonic and morphological history. Using recently collected multibeam bathymetry and PARASOUND data we discuss the geomorphology of the Zambezi Channel. Results show this system ...

New techniques for single‐cell analysis enable new discoveries in gene expression and systems biology. Time‐dependent measurements on individual cells are necessary, yet the common single‐cell analysis techniques used today require lysing the cell, suspending the cell, or long incubation times for transfection, thereby interfering with the ability to track an individual cell over time. Here a method for detecting mRNA expression in live single cells using molecular beacons that are transfected into ...

Abstract The Natal Valley (southwest Indian Ocean) has a complicated and protracted opening history, as has the surrounding southwest Indian Ocean. Recently collected multibeam swath bathymetry and 3.5 kHz seismic data from the Natal Valley reveal anomalous seafloor mounds in the northern Natal Valley. The significance, of these domes, as recorders of the geological history of the Natal Valley and SE African Margin has been overlooked with little attempt made to identify their origin, evolution or ...

The transfer of sediment from the upper continental slope to rise is poorly documented along the southeast African passive margin. New swath bathymetric and sub-bottom data collected in the Natal Valley, southwest Indian Ocean, provide insight into the evolution of the Tugela canyon and fan system. Several distinct downslope changes in canyon morphology are noted. The canyon increases in relief and widens with depth. Basement outcrop is restricted to the head of the canyon becoming less prominent ...
