Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders. Seizures that occur during attacks may lead to head injuries. It is crucial to establish proper prophylactic management against trauma occurrence, as nowadays prevention is not sufficient.Assessment of the frequency of head and intraoral trauma during epileptic seizures and to evaluate factors that may predispose to injuries. The questionnaire was carried out among 106 patients with epilepsy. Survey conducted questions regarding development ...

Invasive or uncomfortable procedures especially during healthcare trigger emotions. Technological development of the equipment and systems for monitoring and recording psychophysiological functions enables continuous observation of changes to a situation responding to a situation. The presented study aimed to focus on the analysis of the individual’s affective state. The results reflect the excitation expressed by the subjects’ statements collected with psychological questionnaires. The research ...

Galanin is a hypothalamic regulatory peptide involved in the regulation of appetite. It is synthesized by the nervous system, anterior pituitary gland, adrenal medulla, pancreas, intestine and placenta. Placental secretion of galanin has until now only been investigated in animals. Additionally, galanin concentration has not been assessed in umbilical cord blood and amniotic fluid.Galanin concentrations were measured in maternal circulation before term delivery, in cord blood and in amniotic fluid ...

The aim of this study was to determine the influence of respiratory chain inhibitors upon iron (III) reduction in Aeromonas hydrophila strain KB1. Optimal conditions of the reduction process were established by determining the amount of biomass, optimal pH, temperature and substrate concentration. The obtained results allowed us to determine Hill equation coefficients (Km=1.45±0.18 mM; Vmax=83.40±2.70 μM/min, and h=0.7±0.03). The value of h points to Michaelis-like kinetics of the process. The substrate ...

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the frequency of use of oral antiplatelet (OAP) and anticoagulant (OAC) drugs as secondary stroke prevention among older people in Poland and its association with sociodemographic factors, place of residence, and concomitant cardiovascular risk factors. The study group consisted of 426 subjects with a history of a previous stroke (mean age of 81.5 ± 8.2 years), participants of multicentre, population-based PolSenior study. Among the study group, 261 people (61. ...

In the paper, the numerical model of the flow phenomena in the flotation machine is presented. The process of flotation consists of a number of phenomena which provide serious numerical difficulties. One can enumerate rotation, two phase flow, foam formation etc. To the knowledge of authors there is no complete numerical model available for the flotation machine. The long-term task of the project is to create a complete model of the machine. Such a model would be very helpful in the process of construction ...

The aim of the study was to define the effect of different short-term metro-rhythmic stimulations on the time and spatial parameters of gait. The secondary goal was to test whether prior instructions on how to respond to stimulations played a significant role in the stimulation by sound stimuli. Experimental tests of gait were conducted on a group of 36 healthy participants: group 1—subjects who were not informed how to react after hearing sound stimuli, group 2—subjects who received a clear instruction ...

Heart rate variability (HRV) indicates that the body is under internal or external stressors. Higher HRV parameters usually means that the body has a ability to cope with those stressors. The paper presents the results of the heart rate variability analysis obtained for a group of healthy adults. 70 adults had been examined. Photoplethysmogram signal had been acquired and processed. The aim of this study was to recognize the relationship between HRV and BMI, WHR and physical activity as an aid in ...

This analysis is based on a review of 224 out of 323 cases of trauma deaths in Regional Specialist Hospital of Grudziądz during the period of 2003-2017. From the objective statistical parameters described, we evaluate the level of quality of State Emergency Medical System in Poland. In the daily struggle of saving lives the question always remains: what could we have done differently? Better? More effectively? To answer this question we have to examine our emergency procedures and activities. Were ...

This paper presents a computer tool for collaborative narration creation based on graph rules hierarchy that was developed and tested with collaboration of students of Jagiellonian University in Poland. The tool is made of two modules: internal representation of game world graph model and animation system: The former describes the narration points and story arcs and the latter uses basic animations and blends them together to create animated sequences. The opportunity to develop the system as a ...

Posture disorder affects more and more people in every age and social group, causing a huge drop in energy (tiredness, depression) or even nerve compression. The early assessment allows introducing therapy that minimizes the influence on everyday life. In the presented approach authors focused on the analysis of thermal images. The research group consists of 101 people, but only 69 were selected for further analysis (24 in the pathological group and 44 described as normative). Appropriate clothing ...

The social system of animals involves a complex interplay between physiology, natural history, and the environment. Long relied upon discrete categorizations of “social” and “solitary” inhibit our capacity to understand species and their interactions with the world around them. Here, we use a globally distributed camera trapping dataset to test the drivers of aggregating into groups in a species complex (martens and relatives, family Mustelidae , Order Carnivora ) assumed to be obligately solitary. We ...
