Abstract Lead was determined in polluted tropical sea water by anodic stripping voltammetry in the differential pulse and linear sweepl modes. The quantitative implications of heavy metal determination in polluted sea water and some electrochemical parameters concerning the two voltammetric modes are discussed, as well as the efficiency of the hanging mercury drop mercury film electrodes. Values found for the total lead concentration range between 0.07 and 5.4 μg kg −1 . Some data are also presented ...

The concentration of iodate and iodide were independently determined in seawater samples from Guanabara Bay (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) taken at depths from 0.15 to 5 m (which was almost the bottom), at various times of day and in three different seasons. The ratio of the two species varied between 0.3 and 3.9, and their concentrations changed at rates of the order of 10 μM h−. This is about two orders of magnitude faster than can be expected from fluxes from sediments. These rates of variation were ...

Organic-copper interactions were studied in Guanabara Bay, Brazil, which represents an example of highly productive, polluted, tropical, coastal waters. Copper speciation was measured by cathodic stripping voltammetry and ligand competition with catechol. The ligand concentrations detected were high and varied between 40 and 300 nM, with conditional stability constants, log K′ values, for complexes with copper varying between 9.6 and 12.4. The organic copper in most samples amounted to 99.5–99.9% ...

The scope of this work is the study of the distribution and accumulation of Cu, Cr, Cd, Pb and Hg in waters and sediments from Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro. An attempt was made to balance removal to the sediments and outputs from the bay. Metal contamination in the sediments is only observed at short distances from the identified point sources. In spite of high primary productivity, the sediments are relatively poor in organic carbon content due to intensive respiratory processes already occurring ...

The activities of Pb-210 and Cs-137 were measured in a sediment core collected from the north-west region of Guanabara Bay, Brazil. On the basis of Pb-210 geochronology, a sedimentation rate of 2 cm year−1 was estimated for the area in recent times. The Cs-137 activity was below the detection limit (0.2−0.8 mBq g−1) in all depths of the core.

The hypothesis that sulfate inhibits dolomite formation evolved from geochemical studies of porewaters from deep-sea sedimentary sequences and has been tested with hydrothermal experiments. We examined the sulfate inhibition factor using aerobic culture experiments with Virgibacillus marismortui and Halomonas meridiana, two moderately halophilic aerobic bacteria, which metabolize independent of sulfate concentration. The culture experiments were conducted at 25 and 35 °C using variable SO42− concentrations ( ...

There are indications that the widespread use of organotin compounds (TBT and TPT) as antifoulings, as stabilizers in plastic and as pesticides, has severely affected several species of marine organisms. The most striking effect of TBT and TPT as hormonal disruptors is the development of male organs in females of gastropods, currently denominated imposex. This syndrome can lead to the sterilization and death of affected organisms. The present work gives an overview of the present state of knowledge ...

Abstract Model experiments were performed to examine the influence of photochemical and biological processes on the iodine speciation in seawater. Artificial seawater and natural seawater samples were exposed to (1) sun light and (2) intensive UV-irradiation and the iodine speciation was determined. Furthermore, outdoor cultures of unfiltered seawater (slightly fertilized with phosphate and nitrogen) were maintained for 45 h, iodate and iodide concentrations being determined every 3 h. The experiments ...

Butyltin compounds were investigated in surface sediments from 17 stations in Todos os Santos Bay. Analytical conditions for organotin determination in marine sediments were optimized for GC with pulsed flame photometric detection. Detection limits were: 5.4 µg kg-1 for TBT; 0.2 µg kg-1 for DBT; and 2.1 µg kg-1 for MBT, using a 610-nm filter. In general, TBT concentrations were low and in the range of <DL to 15.9 µg kg-1. Only in one of the investigated stations DBT and MBT were above detection limit ...

Compositional alterations of oil (MF380) spilled in mangrove sediments was studied over 4 years with an emphasis on weathering of PAH. Sediment cores were sampled yearly in three mangrove forests in Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro, two of which were contaminated by the spill in January 2000 and one was used as a reference area. Hopanes and steranes (46 compounds) were successfully applied to identify the presence of the oil in the most contaminated mangrove (Suruí). However extensive alterations under ...

Pyrene metabolites in urine and micronucleus in haemocytes of crabs (Ucides cordatus) were tested as biomarkers of exposure to oil derived PAHs in mangrove sediments. The goal was to verify how well pyrene metabolites in urine represent levels of oil contamination in mangroves and whether the micronuclei assay indicates exposure. For this, bioassays were performed using crabs from clean and contaminated areas, and field studies were conducted in four mangroves. Results of the bioassay show that U. ...
