This article describes a short term psychoeducational group for low-income Latina mothers with HIV-infection who were undergoing treatment in an outpatient medical setting. Issues involved in recruitment and planning for the group are discussed as well as the predominant clinical issues raised by the mothers. The need for special attention to women in poverty is addressed and suggestions are offered for further development of this group model.

Stress can have a significant impact on many aspects of an organism's physiology and behavior. However, the relationship between stress and regeneration, and how this relationship changes with age remains poorly understood. Here, we subjected young and old zebrafish to a chronic stress protocol and evaluated the impact of stress exposure on multiple measures of zebrafish behavior, specifically thigmotaxis (open field test) and scototaxis (light/dark preference test), and on regeneration ability after ...

Epigenetic processes have gained a great amount of attention in recent years, particularly due to the influence they exert on gene transcription. Several human diseases, including cancer, have been linked to aberrant epigenetic pathways. Consequently, the cellular enzymes that mediate epigenetic events, including histone deacetylases and DNA methyltransferases, have become prime molecular targets for therapeutic intervention. The effective and specific chemical inhibition of these activities is ...

Background A functional cure for chronic HBV could be achieved by boosting HBV-specific immunity. In vitro studies show that immunotherapy could be an effective strategy. However, these studies include strategies to enrich HBV-specific CD8 T cells, which could alter the expression of the anti-PD-1/anti-PD-L1 antibody targets. Our aim was to determine the efficacy of PD-L1 blockade ex vivo . Methods HBV-specific CD8 T cells were characterized ex vivo by flow cytometry for the simultaneous analysis ...

Abstract Background The vertebrate clade diverged into Chondrichthyes (sharks, rays, and chimeras) and Osteichthyes fishes (bony fishes) approximately 420 mya, with each group accumulating vast anatomical and physiological differences, including skin properties. The skin of Chondrichthyes fishes is covered in dermal denticles, whereas Osteichthyes fishes are covered in scales and are mucous rich. The divergence time among these two fish groups is hypothesized to result in predictable variation among ...

We profiled the expression of the 48 human nuclear receptors (NRs) by quantitative RT-PCR in 51 human cancer cell lines of the NCI60 collection derived from nine different tissues. NR mRNA expression accurately classified melanoma, colon, and renal cancers, whereas lung, breast, prostate, central nervous system, and leukemia cell lines exhibited heterogeneous receptor expression. Importantly, receptor mRNA levels faithfully predicted the growth-inhibitory qualities of receptor ligands in nonendocrine ...
