The objective of the present study was to evaluate the species diversity of eels native to Aceh waters based on genetic data. Sampling was conducted in western coast waters of Aceh Province, Indonesia, from July to August 2016. Genomic DNA was extracted from the samples, a genomic region from the 5' region of the cox1 gene was amplified and sequenced, and this was then used to analyse genetic variation. The genetic sequences were blasted into the NCBI database. Based on this analysis there were ...

Tropical species of anguillid glass eels have recently been exploited to be a substitute for the commercially important Anguilla japonica or A. anguilla, so information about their life histories is needed to facilitate conservation. To understand ecological aspects of glass eel recruitment patterns of tropical eels, Anguilla spp., monthly monitoring of species compositions at the mouth of the Cagayan River in northern Luzon in the Philippines was carried out at different time periods from May 2008 ...

A new anguillid eel species, Anguilla luzonensis, was recently discovered on Luzon Island of the northern Philippines, but little is known about its life history. DNA identification was used to determine that five leptocephali of this species (29.2–51.2 mm) were collected offshore in the western North Pacific (13°–17.5° N, 125°–141° E) in April, June, and July between 2002 and 2009. One leptocephalus was caught west of Luzon and four were close to the spawning areas of Anguilla japonica and Anguilla ...

To determine the migratory pattern and habitat use of freshwater eels in the Philippines, we analyzed the strontium to calcium (Sr:Ca) ratio of their otoliths with the use of an electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA). The changes in the otolith Sr:Ca ratios reflect the migratory pattern of the eels between different salinity gradients. A total of 22 eels were collected from the Chico and Cagayan Rivers in Northern Luzon, the Philippines. Beyond the elver stage, the migratory pattern of the eels diversified ...

376 leptocephali ofAnguilla anguilla (L., 1758) from the Iberian Basin were analysed. The observed horizontal trends of abundance and particularly the mean sizes contradict the expectations based on the hypothesis of larvae distribution exclusively by drift with Gulf and North Atlantic Currents, and support the hypothesis of an active larval migration also south of the Azores.

The structure of the scales in Anguilla anguilla was studied by light and electron microscopy and the mineral phase was analyzed by histophysical techniques. Although the scales of the eel are small in size and have a peculiar superficial ornamentation, which consists of a web of mineralized plates, they are composed of the three characteristic layers of the typical elasmoid scale. The discontinuous, superficial outer limiting layer is highly mineralized; in this layer, acid mucosubstances are abundant ...

The present paper lists all parasite species of the European eel Anguilla anguilla (Linnaeus, 1758), recorded in Poland, in both its saltwater and freshwater habitats. The list has been drawn up, based on data acquired since 1844. Abstract The aim of the study was to examine metazoans parasite communities of European eels (Anguilla anguilla) in freshwater (Tonga Lake) and brackish water (El Mellah lagoon) in the northeast of Algeria. Six parasite taxa were collected: one monogenean, Pseudodactylogyrus sp.; two crustaceans, Ergasilus sp. and Argulus foliaceus; two nematodes, Cucullanus sp. and Anguillicola crassus; one cestode, Bothriocephalus claviceps. Th e most prevalent parasite taxa in freshwater were Pseudodactylogyrus ...

Globally, both natural water bodies and aquaculture systems are being severely contaminated by heavy metals due to rising anthropogenic activities. Fish living in aquatic environments can easily accumulate metals in their bodies, which can then be transferred to consumers and put them at risk. In this study, metal concentrations (Pb, Cd, Cr, As, Mn, Cu, Zn) in different organs (gill, liver, and muscle) of farmed and wild Barramundi (Lates calcarifer) fish from the northern Bay of Bengal were evaluated ...

We combined fatty acid (FA) and stable isotope (SI) analyses to investigate the trophic ecology of different stages of European eels (Anguilla anguilla) across seawater (SW), brackish water (BW), and freshwater (FW) habitats. Salinity was the main driver of differences in the biochemical composition, and the greatest variation occurred between SW and FW eels. SW eels had a higher content of the FA indicator of carnivory, as well as the highest stable isotope ratios (C, N). In contrast, FW eels exhibited ...

The abundance of Japanese eel Anguilla japonica has rapidly decreased in recent decades. Following a re-evaluation of the possibility of extinction, the Japanese Ministry of the Environment and the International Union for Conservation of Nature listed the Japanese eel as an endangered species in 2013 and 2014, respectively. However, their abundance and precise distribution have never been clarified owing to their nocturnality and difficulty in their capture. In this study, the distribution of Japanese ...

The lateral line system and its innervation were examined in the Japanese eel Anguilla japonica. Although the species has seven lateral line canals and 13 superficial neuromast groups, the components are generally similar to those in many other teleosts. The lateral line system of A. japonica is distinctive in having a rostral commissure connecting the left and right supraorbital canals, pouches in the cephalic lateral line canals and superficial neuromasts along the lower lip, and lacking a postotic ...

Hg accumulation in marine organisms depends strongly on in situ water or sediment biogeochemistry and levels of Hg pollution. To predict the rates of Hg exposure in human communities, it is important to understand Hg assimilation and processing within commercially harvested marine fish, like the European seabass Dicentrarchus labrax. Previously, values of Δ199Hg and δ202Hg in muscle tissue successfully discriminated between seven populations of European seabass. In the present study, a multi-tissue ...
