Bezafibrate has been shown to effectively reduce elevated levels of very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) in hypertriglyceridaemia. It has also been claimed to be particularly effective in increasing high density lipoprotein (HDL) concentrations. In the present study 15 hypertriglyceridaemic patients (9 type IIB, 1 type III and 5 type IV) were investigated before and after 2 months' treatment with bezafibrate (600 mg daily) in an effort to clarify further the effects of the drug on lipoprotein metabolism. ...

Three groups of rats were maintained on diets containing different proportions of trans fatty acids (0, 18.3 or 36.6% of the total fatty acids) for eight weeks. No differences in body weight were observed among the three groups, but the fat cell size, determined in epididymal fat, differed significantly between the controls and the rats fed diets containing trans fatty acids. The supernatant obtained by centrifuging homogenates of liver from the rats at 9000 X g (S-9 fraction) was used as an activator ...

Clinical and experimental evidence points to potential antiatherosclerotic effects of certain β-adrenoreceptor antagonists. Long-term treatment with metoprolol resulted in significant reductions of total and cardiovascular mortality or morbidity due to decreased incidence of coronary and cerebrovascular complications both in a primary prevention trial in hypertensive patients and in a secondary prevention trial in patients surviving myocardial infarction. The observations suggest that a retardation ...

The aim of the study was to examine the cognitive function and self-perception in a school-population-based sample of children with Tourette syndrome (TS). Many studies have examined cognitive and emotional functioning in clinical samples but to our knowledge, there is no population-based study of TS in schoolchildren. In a population-based sample identified in a rigid diagnostic procedure (n = 25), cognitive functioning and self-perception were examined. There was a large variation in the cognitive ...

The generation of high quality plasma from whole blood is of major interest for many biomedical analyses and clinical diagnostic methods. However, it has proven to be a major challenge to make use of microfluidic separation devices to process fluids with high cell content, such as whole blood. Here, we report on an acoustophoresis based separation chip that prepares diagnostic plasma from whole blood linked to a clinical application. This acoustic separator has the capacity to sequentially remove ...

Background Retinal detachment (RD) with proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) often requires surgery. During surgery, a tamponade agent is needed to reduce the rate of recurrent retinal detachment. Objectives The objective of this review was to evaluate the benefits and adverse outcomes of surgery with various tamponade agents. Search methods We searched the Cochrane Controlled Register (CENTRAL), MEDLINE, EMBASE, Latin America and Carribbean Health Sciences (LILACS) and the UK Clinical Trials Gateway ( ...

The urban water system is believed to be an important sink for the nonpoint-source pollutants nonylphenols and phthalates. The presence of nonylphenols (NPs), nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEOs), and eight phthalates was analyzed in urban stormwater and sediment from three catchment areas in Sweden. Emission loads for these substances were then calculated for a specific urban catchment area. In addition, substance distribution in road runoff passing through a sedimentation facility was modeled using a ...

Twenty-two volatile aromatic hydrocarbons were determined in the air of an automobile during commuting. Sampling was made on Tenax cartridges and laboratory determinations were carried out using thermal desorption combined with temperature-programmed capillary gas chromatography. Selected hydrocarbons representative of petrol exhaust were determined in the automobile and in an electric commuter train during eight parallel commuter trips. In the automobile, the concentrations of benzene were 35–70 ...

Abstract Concentration levels in air were determined for monoterpenes emitted from forestry operations in south‐west Sweden. Field samples were collected on Tenax cartridges and analyzed in the laboratory by techniques based on gas chromatography. Processing of Scots pine as well as Norway spruce with a harvester gave rise to ∼ 1000 μg/m3 of total monoterpenes near the machine. The corresponding levels above fresh branch wood were 100–500 μg/m3. The background level was —1 μg/m3. The major monoterpenes ...

Sampling of monoterpenes from air on Tenax porous polymer may introduce analytical errors owing to oxidation and acid rearrangements on the adsorbent. Particularly terpenes which react rapidly with ozone, e.g. myrcene and limonene, are partially lost when sampling air with high photooxidant levels. On acidified adsorption cartridges, α-pinene and β-pinene may be converted into camphene, limonene, β-cymene and several minor monoterpenes. Pretreatment of the adsorbent cartridges with thiosulphate ...

Reduction of plasma cholesterol by statins is fundamental to prevent coronary heart disease. Such therapy is often sub-optimal, however, particularly in patients with reduced LDL receptors (familial hypercholesterolemia), and novel or adjuvant therapies are therefore warranted. Cholesterol elimination is profoundly influenced by the rate of its conversion to bile acids (BA), regulated by the enzyme Cyp7a1. Induced fecal loss of BA by resin treatment reduces plasma cholesterol, presumably through induction ...

Findings from a study of 563 adolescents' reactions following a discotheque fire that killed 63 young people in Göteborg in October 1998 are presented. The group answered a questionnaire seven months following the disaster. The questionnaire included the Impact of Event Scale (IES) and the Birleson Depression Self-Rating Scale (DSRS). The level of trauma was found to be very high, while depression scores were less elevated. A little under a third of the students scored above a clinical cut-off point (> ...

The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) is an internationally widely used, brief screening instrument for mental health problems in children and teenagers. The SDQ probes behaviours and psychological attributes reflecting the child's difficulties as well as strengths, and targets hyperactivity/inattention, emotional symptoms, conduct problems, peer problems and prosocial behaviour. Also, the instrument taps the impact aspect, i.e. whether the child is judged to suffer from emotional or ...

This study investigated relations between emotionality, emotion regulation, and children's behavioral adaptation in a longitudinal design. Mothers rated emotionality and emotion regulation related to anger, fear, and positive emotions-exuberance for 151 children at age 5 and later at age 6 years 6 months. Emotionality and emotion regulation measures were modestly related. Preschool ratings at age 6 (n = 125), maternal ratings at age 6 years 6 months (n = 133), and elementary school ratings at age 8 (n = ...
