To provide further information on the clinical and pathological prognostic factors in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), for which limited and inconsistent data are available. Pathological characteristics and clinical records of 841 TNBCs diagnosed between 1994 and 2015 in four major oncologic centers from Sardinia, Italy, were reviewed. Multivariate hazard ratios (HRs) for mortality and recurrence according to various clinicopathological factors were estimated using Cox proportional hazards models. ...

A diamine oxidase (DAO) (EC 1.4.3.6) has been purified to homogeneity from lentil seedlings. The purified protein has a MW of 154 000 and is composed of two apparently identical subunits. It contains two CU2+ atoms and one carbonyl-like group per mol. The purified enzyme is pink-red in concentrated solution and shows a broad, well-defined, absorption band in the visible region centered at 498 nm. The ESR spectrum is typical of Cu2+ in a tetragonal symmetry. The enzyme oxidizes only aliphatic diamines ...

Abstract Background One of the most interesting problems in molecular immunology is epitope mapping, i.e. the identification of the regions of interaction between an antigen and an antibody. The solution to this problem, even if approximate, would help in designing experiments to precisely map the residues involved in the interaction and could be instrumental both in designing peptides able to mimic the interacting surface of the antigen and in understanding where immunologically important regions ...

The technological innovation in the field of lighting and the need to reduce energy consumption connected to public lighting are leading many municipalities to undertake the renewal of public lighting systems, by replacing the existing luminaires with LED technologies. This renovation process is usually aimed at increasing energy efficiency and reducing maintenance costs, whist improving the lighting performance. To achieve these results, the new luminaires are often characterised by a luminous ...

Diamine oxidase from Euphorbia characias latex contains two sulfhydryl groups per mole of dimeric enzyme. The sulfhydryl groups are unreactive in the native enzyme but can be readily titrated by 4,4′-dithiodipyridine after protein denaturation, or anaerobically in the presence of the amine substrate. In the presence of both substrates (diamine and oxygen) they react sluggishly. The sulfhydryl groups show different reactivity toward various reagents, but in every case their modification inhibits catalytic ...

Methods: A family affected by cardiac abnormalities, either isolated or variably associated with skeletal muscle compromise, was identified. LMNA gene analysis was applied to all family members. Results: A novel intron 5 (c.937‐11 C>G) mutation was identified. mRNA transcription analysis was subsequently performed, ...

The inhibitory action that a Brevibacillus laterosporus strain isolated from the honeybee body causes against the American Foulbrood (AFB) etiological agent Paenibacillus larvae was studied by in-vitro experiments. A protein fraction isolated from B. laterosporus culture supernatant was involved in the observed inhibition of P. larvae vegetative growth and spore germination. As a result of LC–MS/MS proteomic analyses, the bacteriocin laterosporulin was found to be the major component of this fraction, ...

ABSTRACT Centrosomes nucleate microtubules and are tightly coupled to the bipolar spindle to ensure genome integrity, cell division orientation and centrosome segregation. While the mechanisms of centrosome-dependent microtubule nucleation and bipolar spindle assembly have been the focus of numerous works, less is known about the mechanisms ensuring the centrosome–spindle coupling. The conserved NuMA protein (Mud in Drosophila) is best known for its role in spindle orientation. Here, we analyzed ...

Oxidative stress is prevalent in dialysis patients and has been implicated in the pathogenesis of anemia and cardiovascular disease. Vitamin E-coated membranes are low-flux dialyzers consisting of a multilayer membrane with liposoluble vitamin E on the blood surface allowing direct contact with free oxygen radicals to be scavenged on the membrane site. The antioxidant properties of these membranes have an important clinical benefit because of reducing oxygen stress and inflammation may contribute ...

Abstract Most methods for single-cell transcriptome sequencing amplify the termini of polyadenylated transcripts, capturing only a small fraction of the total cellular transcriptome. This precludes the detection of many long non-coding, short non-coding and non-polyadenylated protein-coding transcripts and hinders alternative splicing analysis. We, therefore, developed VASA-seq to detect the total transcriptome in single cells, which is enabled by fragmenting and tailing all RNA molecules subsequent ...

Herein we report the inhibitory effects of a series of (4-(4-hydroxyphenyl)piperazin-1-yl)arylmethanone derivatives, that were designed, synthesised and assayed against TYR from Agaricus bisporus (AbTYR). The electrochemical behavior of redox centers in the active site of amine oxidases from lentil seedlings and Euphorbia characias latex was investigated using a mercury film electrode. Tyrosine-derived 6-hydroxydopa quinone (TPQ) and copper ions in the active site are redox centers of these amine oxidases. The enzymes undergo two reduction processes at negative potentials related to the reduction of the TPQ cofactor to the corresponding hydroquinones and the reduction of copper ions, (Cu(II)-->Cu(I)). ...

In the initial stages of transendothelial migration, leukocytes use the endothelial integrin ligands ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 for strong adhesion. Upon adhesion of the leukocyte to endothelial ICAM-1, ICAM-1 is clustered and recruited to the adhered leukocyte, promoting strong adhesion. In this study, we provide evidence for the colocalization of VCAM-1 at sites of ICAM-1 clustering. Anti-ICAM-1 antibody-coated beads were used to selectively cluster and recruit ICAM-1 on primary human endothelial cells. ...

Abstract. The definition of hydrological alert systems for rainfall-induced landslides is strongly related to a deep knowledge of the geological and geomorphological features of the territory. Climatic conditions, spatial and temporal evolution of the phenomena and characterization of landslide triggering, together with propagation mechanisms, are the key elements to be considered. Critical steps for the development of the systems consist of the identification of the hydrological variable related ...

All species show testes of unrestricted lobular type, characterized by a single germinal compartment, with central lumen, and an external tunica albuginea.
