Type VIII collagen is a matrix protein expressed in a number of tissues undergoing active remodeling, including injured arteries during neointimal formation and in human atherosclerotic plaques; however, very little is known about its function. We have investigated whether the type VIII collagen stimulates smooth muscle cell (SMC) migration and invasion by binding to integrin receptors and up-regulating matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) production. SMCs attached to plates coated with type VIII collagen ...

Leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) and Ciliary Neurotrophic factor (CNTF) are members of the interleukin-6 family of cytokines, defined by use of the gp130 molecule as an obligate receptor. In the murine experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) model, antagonism of LIF and genetic deletion of CNTF worsen disease. The potential mechanism of action of these cytokines in EAE is complex, as gp130 is expressed by all neural cells, and could involve immuno-modulation, reduction of oligodendrocyte injury, ...

ObjectiveChildren exposed to early institutional rearing are at risk for developing psychopathology. The present investigation examines caregiving quality and the role of attachment security as they relate to symptoms of psychopathology in young children exposed to early institutionalization.MethodParticipants were enrolled in the Bucharest Early Intervention Project (BEIP), a longitudinal intervention study of children abandoned and placed in institutions at or shortly after birth. Measures included ...

The mRNA present in extracts of mouse sarcoma 180 (S-180) ascites cells is relatively resistant to degradation when compared to added tracer ribosomal RNA. Deproteinized mRNA added to the extract is about as resistant as the endogenous mRNA, an indication that the protection is not due to any protein present in the endogenous mRNP structure. A major determinant of protection lies at the 5′ end of RNA chains, where the presence of a triphosphate or a cap enhances the stability of mRNA transcripts. ...

Background. In the aging process, loss of muscle is relatively continuous, but the initiation, timing, and amount of muscle loss that relate to functional compromise are poorly described. Also poorly understood is whether strength and functioning in aging are related to the amount of lean mass and its change as well as to the amount of fat mass and its change. Methods. The purpose of the study was to ascertain whether 3-year lean and fat mass change predicted functional status in 712 African American ...

Persistent infection of the uterine cervix with high-risk human papillomaviruses (HPV) is causally associated with cancer of the cervix. A few studies have reported the presence of HPV DNA in the blood of women with cervical neoplasia. The aim of this study was to determine if HPV DNA could be detected in whole blood of women with a range of cervical pathologies and with HPV 16 or 18 cervical infections and if there is a correlation between cervical lesion grade and the appearance of HPV DNA in the ...

lmmature soybean cotyledons were cultured in vitro on a ‘complete’ medium with and without supplementation with methionine. The supplement increased dry wt by 23 %. The growth increase indicated that under these conditions the cotyledons could not synthesize methionine rapidly enough to supply the methionine required for maximum protein synthesis. This indication was supported by finding that aminoacylation of methionyl-transfer RNA was increased 18 % by methionine supplementation. Supplemental methionine ...

A second generation nucleic acid hybridization assay has been developed and evaluated against the conventional culture method for detection of salmonellae in foods. The assay involves a liquid hybridization with Salmonella-specific oligonucleotide probes, capture of probe:target hybrids onto a solid support (plastic dipstick), and a colorimetric end point detection. The assay can be completed in 2.5 h, following approximately 44 h of culture enrichment. One thousand samples representing 20 food types ...
