Amy E. Potter, Sean Chenoweth, Mick Day,

The country of Antigua and Barbuda comprises two islands located in the Lesser Antilles of the Caribbean. While both islands are positioned on the Barbuda Bank, they each consist of a unique geologic setting: Antigua is composed of volcanic rock, clay, and limestone, while Barbuda is largely limestone with prominent cave features. Their unique attributes are not just geologic, as the two islands also have differing histories that developed in part due to environmental constraints—Antigua’s enslaved ...

Jennifer C. Daltry,

At least 29 reptiles and amphibians have been documented on Antigua, Barbuda and Redonda, of which 21 are probably native. These include four species of marine turtles, two of which (Eretmochelys imbricata and Chelonia mydas) are known to nest on the nation's numerous sandy beaches and forage in nearshore waters. The low-lying and largely sedimentary islands of Antigua (280 km2) and Barbuda (161 km2) formed a single island as recently as 12,000 years ago and exhibit a similar herpetofauna with high ...

Group B streptococcus is the most common cause of neonatal sepsis in the United States of America (USA). This study was undertaken to determine the contribution of group B streptococcus to neonatal septicaemia in Antigua and Barbuda. From 1994 to 2002, there were about 12,000 births, with 2500 Special Care Nursery admissions, 1100 (44%) with potential neonatal septicaemia. Blood cultures were done in 433/1100 (39%) and cerebrospinal fluid cultures in 52/1100 (5%). Positive cultures were seen in 41/433 ( ...

Hurricanes and tropical storms have a substantial and sustained influence on fisheries globally. These threats present particularly significant challenges in Caribbean islands, where fisheries contribute towards economies, food security, and social and cultural identities. Yet, storm impacts on coastal communities and fisheries are a relatively neglected area of disaster risk reduction. In response, this paper reports on a novel application and adaptation of the Pressure and Release model (PAR) focused ...

Antiguans and Barbudans have both raised concerns over the disaster recovery solutions put in place to mitigate damages sustained during Hurricane Irma in September 2017. In Barbuda, the potential loss of commonhold land ownership and the possibility of a land grab by foreign investors has tended to portray the island as a victim of disaster capitalism rather than as a resilient community. At the same time, neither island has addressed its vulnerabilities to future extreme events through any substantive ...

The nation of Antigua and Barbuda has experienced major degradation of its coral reef ecosystems over the past 40+ years. The primary drivers of this degradation are multiple and are highly linked to anthropogenic influences, including over-exploitation and poor management of marine resources. The effectiveness of management actions in marine protected areas (MPAs) has often been hampered by a lack of data to inform management recommendations. This was emphasized by The Nature Conservancy’s (TNC) ...

The use of antibiotics for appendicectomy in Antigua and Barbuda, from January 1998 to December 1999, was examined with respect to current Surgical Infection Society guidelines from developed countries. There were 143 cases of appendicectomy performed at Holberton Hospital. The mean patient age and standard deviation (SD) was 28.1 +/- 15.8 years, 57% female. Pathology showed inflammed appendix only in 56%, peri-appendiceal abscess/perforation in 17%, "fibrosed" appendix in 10% and normal appendix in 17%. ...

The EDD based on last menstrual period (LMP) was calculated for 104 women with dates and compared with EDD calculated from ultrasound test.
