Mycobacterium leprae infects macrophages and Schwann cells inducing a gene expression program to facilitate its replication and progression to disease. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are key regulators of gene expression and could be involved during the infection. To address the genetic influence of miRNAs in leprosy, we enrolled 1,098 individuals and conducted a case-control analysis in order to study four miRNAs genes containing single nucleotide polymorphism (miRSNP). We tested miRSNP-125a (rs12975333 G>T), ...

Cross-linking of silica aerogels with organic polymers is an effective way to overcome their fragility and poor mechanical properties. It has also been shown that adjusting the nanoskeleton of silica aerogels using different silica precursors can lead to improved mechanical properties, mesoporosity and thermal conductivity. In this paper, the effect of the incorporation of 1,6-bis(trimethoxysilyl)hexane (BTMSH) and 1,4-bis(triethoxysilyl)-benzene (BTESB) into the underlying silica structure of tri- ...

Soil erosion is one of the most significant environmental degradation processes. Mapping and assessment of soil erosion vulnerability is an important tool for planning and management of the natural resources. The objective of the present study was to apply the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) using GIS tools to the Verde River Basin (VRB), southern Minas Gerais, in order to assess soil erosion vulnerability. A annual rainfall erosivity map was derived from the geographical model adjusted ...

Silica aerogels are lightweight and highly porous materials, with a three-dimensional network of silica particles, which are obtained by extracting the liquid phase of silica gels under supercritical conditions. Due to their outstanding characteristics, such as extremely low thermal conductivity, low density, high porosity and high specific surface area, they have found excellent potential application for thermal insulation systems in aeronautical/aerospace and earthly domains, for environment clean ...

Ambient pressure dried (APD) silica aerogel-like monoliths with different underlying silica structures have been developed through a simple wet chemical approach. The improvement of the mechanical properties was accomplished by cross-linking the silica surface with triacrylate cross-linker. A solvent exchange carried out by soaking the gels in a low surface tension solvent allowed to avoid the nonsafe and costly supercritical drying process. In this context, two different sets of aerogel-like monoliths ...

Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) functionalized with antimicrobial agents are promising infection-targeted therapeutic platforms when coupled with external magnetic stimuli. These antimicrobial nanoparticles (NPs) may offer advantages in fighting intracellular pathogens as well as biomaterial-associated infections. This requires the development of NPs with high antimicrobial activity without interfering with the biology of mammalian cells. Here, we report the preparation of biocompatible ...

In this study, a mechanically robust silica aerogel has been successfully prepared based on the integration of a crosslinker in the poly (butyl acrylate) grafted silica network via surface - initiated reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer technique. Substantial improvements regarding the compressive strength with only a slight difference in aerogel physical properties have been achieved.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading cause of cancer death worldwide. Microsatellite instability (MSI) is a genetic pathway leading to CRC, associated with particular clinicopathological features, and recently a major biomarker of immunotherapy response. There is little information the frequency MSI among Brazilian CRC patients, and it is still debatable the ideal methodology for MSI screening in countries with limited resources. We proposed to evaluate MSI by molecular and immunohistochemistry (IHC) ...

The rapid worldwide spread of chikungunya (CHIKV), dengue (DENV), and Zika (ZIKV) viruses have raised great international concern. Knowledge about the entry routes and geographic expansion of these arboviruses to the mainland Americas remain incomplete and controversial. Epidemics caused by arboviruses continue to cause socioeconomic burden globally, particularly in countries where vector control is difficult due to climatic or infrastructure factors. Understanding how the virus circulates and moves ...

A new method of screening was developed to generate 770 organic and water-soluble fractions from extracts of nine species of marine sponges, from the growth media of 18 species of marine-derived fungi, and from the growth media of 13 species of endophytic fungi. The screening results indicated that water-soluble fractions displayed significant bioactivity in cytotoxic, antibiotic, anti-Leishmania, anti-Trypanosoma cruzi, and inhibition of proteasome assays. In previous works, a one-dimensional model was built to simulate the nonsteady radial combustion propagation on thin disk-shaped samples of Fe2O3/aluminum thermite mixtures and was successfully tested. Now, the purpose is to extend the referred model to the more sensible two-dimensional features of the samples, maintaining the main characteristics of the previous model: zero-order kinetics, conductive/radiative heat transfer, assumption of phase transitions, temperature and composition dependency ...

Abstract The self‐sustained thermite reaction between iron oxide (Fe 2 O 3 ) and aluminum is a classical source of energy. In this work the radial combustion propagation on thin circular samples of stoichiometric and over aluminized Fe 2 O 3 /Al thermite mixtures is studied. The radial geometry allows an easy detection of sample heterogeneities and the observation of the combustion behavior in their vicinity. The influence of factors like reactant mixtures stoichiometry, samples green density and system ...

This work reports an efficient method for the preparation of aqueous dispersions of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs), involving the use of an amphiphilic block copolymer, poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(4-vinyl pyridine) (mPEG-b-P4VP). The iron oxide nanoparticles are easily and efficiently dispersed due to the strong direct interaction of the hydrophobic P4VP segments, through complexation with pyridine units of the copolymer. Well-defined block copolymers, having different compositions ...

Aerogels are regarded as one of the most effective thermal insulation materials. Starting from methyltrimethoxysilene (MTMS) as sol–gel precursor, the supercritically dried silica based aerogels exhibit very low density and thermal conductivity, high hydrophobicity and remarkable flexibility, meeting the requirements for weight-sensitive insulation applications, e.g. for Space environments. However, further improvement in the properties of MTMS–derived aerogels may be achieved by using small amounts ...

The sensitivity of a one-dimensional model, built to simulate the non-steady radial combustion propagation on thin circular samples of Fe2O3/aluminium thermite mixtures, was tested in relation to its least reliable thermophysical properties and to non-homogeneities in the initial reactant media. Zero order kinetics and conductive/radiative heat transfer were considered. The model is quite insensitive to variations of most of the properties studied. The highest sensitivity detected concerned aluminium ...

In this work, the sol-gel technology is used to produce silica based xerogels and aerogels suitable for insulation applications in Space. The properties of the obtained materials are tailored varying the precursor – Methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) or Methyltriethoxysilane (MTES), and the solvent – methanol or ethanol. A two-step acid-base catalyzed synthesis is used, being the obtained gels dried at atmospheric pressure, in the case of xerogels, and in supercritical conditions, for aerogels. Density and ...

A one-dimensional model was built to simulate the non-steady radial combustion propagation on thin circular samples of Fe2O3/Aluminum thermite mixtures. Abstract Aerogel‐like silica based materials were obtained by microwave drying of the gels synthesized with methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) precursor. The microwave drying is an alternative ambient pressure drying technique for these nanostructured materials that allows a fast fine drying stage and avoids the high temperature cycles of conventional evaporative drying. The gels were synthesized by a two‐step acid‐base catalyzed sol‐gel process following the procedures described in an earlier work. After ...
