The pineal gland classically has been considered as a vestigial and mystic organ. In the last decades, and with the incorporation of new methodologic procedures, it could be proved that it also has physiologic actions that vary depending on the level of the phylogenetic scale. Its best-known secretion, melatonin, has been related to many different actions, such as sleep promotion, control of biologic rhythms, hormonal inhibition, and an inhibiting action on central nervous system regulation mechanisms. ...

Improving fruit quality has become a major goal in plant breeding. Direct approaches to tackling fruit quality traits specifically linked to consumer preferences and environmental friendliness, such as improved flavor, nutraceutical compounds and sustainability, have slowly been added to a breeder priority list that already includes traits like productivity, efficiency, and, especially, pest and disease control. Breeders already use molecular genetic tools to improve fruit quality although most ...

Summary The fertility of young bulls impacts on reproduction rates, farm profit and the rate of genetic progress in beef herds. Cattle researchers and industry therefore routinely collect data on the reproductive performance of bulls. Genome‐wide association studies were carried out to identify genomic regions and genes associated with reproductive traits measured during the pubertal development of Tropical Composite bulls, from 4 to 24 months of age. Data from 1 085 bulls were collected for seven ...

Background Previous studies have demonstrated significant variability in the processes of care and outcomes of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations. The AUDIPOC is a Spanish nationwide clinical audit that identified large between-hospital variations in care and clinical outcomes. Here, we test the hypothesis that these variations can be attributed to either patient characteristics, hospital characteristics and/or the so-called hospital-clustering effect, which indicates that ...

In May 1988, the hepatitis A antibody (anti-HAV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) markers were studied by radioimmunoassay in 484 apparently healthy children between the ages of 7 and 12, attending a primary school in Naples, Italy. The overall anti-HAV prevalence was 11.2%, increasing from 5.2 in 7-year-old children to 28.2% in children between the ages of 11 and 12 years old. The overall prevalence of the hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and of other HBV markers were 0.8 and 6.8 respectively. Compared ...

Abstract X-ray diffraction, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and DFT calculations have been used to shed light over the structure and properties of N , N -(diethylcarbamothioyl)furan-2-carboxamide, a non-conventional ionophore for sensor applications. The attention was focused over the molecular conformation in three different phases – i.e. solid state, solution and gas – before and after the interaction with a heavy metal ion, thus simulating the behaviour of the molecule as a ionophore in a typical Ion Selective ...

The relationship between peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARG) expression and epigenetic changes occurring in colorectal-cancer pathogenesis is largely unknown. We investigated whether PPARG is epigenetically regulated in colorectal cancer (CRC) progression. PPARG expression was assessed in CRC tissues and paired normal mucosa by western blot and immunohistochemistry and related to patients' clinicopathological parameters and survival. PPARG promoter methylation was analyzed by methylation- ...

We describe a systems biology approach for the genetic dissection of complex traits based on applying gene network theory to the results from genome-wide associations. The associations of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) that were individually associated with a primary phenotype of interest, age at puberty in our study, were explored across 22 related traits. Genomic regions were surveyed for genes harboring the selected SNP. As a result, an association weight matrix (AWM) was constructed with ...

The adsorption of an EAK 16-II oligopeptide sequence in aqueous medium onto functionalized quartz surfaces has been studied by using force field calculations and molecular dynamics methods. Two different surfaces have been simulated respectively involving fully methylated and fully silanolic quartz surfaces. Geometry optimization and molecular dynamics simulations showed that the adsorption process is mainly governed by the electrostatic interactions between SiO- surface groups and the charged residues ...

Some genetic determinants of longevity might reside in those polymorphisms for the immune system genes that regulate immune responses. Many longevity association studies focused their attention on HLA (the human MHC) polymorphisms, but discordant results have been obtained. Sardinians are a relatively isolate population and represent a suitable population for association studies. Some HLA-DR and DQ alleles form very stable haplotypes with a strong linkage disequilibrium. In a previous study on Sardinian ...

Harsh tropical environments impose serious challenges on poorly adapted species. In beef cattle, tropical adaptation in the form of temperature and disease resistance, coupled with acclimatization to seasonal and limited forage, comes at a cost to production efficiency. Prominent among these costs is delayed onset of puberty, a challenging phenotype to manipulate through traditional breeding mechanisms. Recently, system biology approaches, including gene networks, have been applied to the genetic ...

The promise of genomic selection is accurate prediction of the genetic potential of animals from their genotypes. Simple DNA tests might replace low-accuracy predictions for expensive or lowly heritable measures of puberty and fertility based on performance and pedigree. Knowing with some certainty which DNA variants (e.g., SNP) affect puberty and fertility is the best way to fulfill the promise. Several SNP from the BovineSNP50 assay have tentatively been associated with reproductive traits including ...

Abstract Osteosarcoma is the second leading cause of cancer‐related death for children and young adults. In this study, we have subcutaneously injected—with and without matrigel—athymic mice (Fox1nu/nu) with human osteosarcoma 3AB‐OS pluripotent cancer stem cells (CSCs), which we previously isolated from human osteosarcoma MG63 cells. Engrafted 3AB‐OS cells were highly tumorigenic and matrigel greatly accelerated both tumor engraftment and growth rate. 3AB‐OS CSC xenografts lacked crucial regulators ...

Intestinal microflora can be considered an organ of the body. It has several functions in the human gut, mostly metabolic and immunologic, and constantly interacts with the intestinal mucosa in a delicate equilibrium. Chronic diarrhea is associated with an alteration of gut microbiota when a pathogen invades the gut and also in several conditions associated with intestinal mucosal damage or bowel dysfunction, as in inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome , or small bowel bacterial overgrowth . ...

Bull fertility is an important target for genetic improvement, and early prediction using genetic markers is therefore a goal for livestock breeding. We performed genome-wide association studies to identify genes associated with fertility traits measured in young bulls. Data from 1118 Brahman bulls were collected for six traits: blood hormone levels of inhibin (IN) at 4 mo, luteinizing hormone (LH) following a gonadotropin-releasing hormone challenge at 4 mo, and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) ...

Many traits affecting profitability and sustainability of meat, milk, and fiber production are polygenic, with no single gene having an overwhelming influence on observed variation. No knowledge of the specific genes controlling these traits has been needed to make substantial improvement through selection. Significant gains have been made through phenotypic selection enhanced by pedigree relationships and continually improving statistical methodology. Genomic selection, recently enabled by assays ...

Povidone-iodine (PVP-I) or Betadine, owing to its antineoplastic activity, is also used as an adjuvant during intra-abdominal or intrathoracic surgery. However, the protocol of PVP-I administration has not been optimized to achieve the best antitumoural efficacy. We aimed to determine the optimal concentration of PVP-I, the time of incubation and the mechanism of cell death by analysing the effect of different doses and time of administration of PVP-I on the cell viability of different mesothelioma ...
