In the present study, two Leishmania infantum hypothetical proteins present in the amastigote stage, LiHyp1 and LiHyp6, were combined with a promastigote protein, IgE-dependent histamine-releasing factor (HRF); to compose a polyproteins vaccine to be evaluated against L. infantum infection. Also, the antigenicity of the three proteins was analyzed, and their use for the serodiagnosis of canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) was evaluated. The LiHyp1, LiHyp6, and HRF DNA coding sequences were cloned ...

Abstract The spatial characterization of soil protection is important for preventing land degradation. Mulch covers of pruning residues are increasingly used by farmers, but little is known regarding their spatial variability. Thus, field research was conducted in a 14·7‐ha traditional olive grove located in Córdoba (Spain), to evaluate the variability of the initial density of pruning (Dp o ), tree crown volume ( V ) and N content in residues (Np). Dry pruning weight and Np were characterized in 49 and 47 ...

We report the 5-year results of our simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantation (SPKT) program, started on May 2, 2000. Forty-two SPKT were performed on 42 type I diabetic patients with chronic renal failure. The procedure was performed with enteric diversion and vascular anastomosis to the iliac vessels. Immunosuppressive protocol included antithymocyte globulin, tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofetil, and steroids. The 24 women and 18 men had a mean age of 33.5 +/- 6.3 years and mean 22.8 +/- 14.2 years time ...

Heart valve surgery outcomes are unknown in middle-income countries and thus cannot be used in health system decision making processes. This study estimated in-hospital mortality and medium and long-term survival. This was a retrospective study of 78,806 patients who underwent heart valve surgery between 2001 and 2007 in Brazil. Two national databases were used, the Hospital Information System and the Mortality Information System. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and log-rank tests were performed. ...

The analysis and development of a novel approach to asphalt pavement modeling, able to attend the need to predict the failure according to technical and non-technical criteria in a highway, is a hard task, namely in terms of the huge amount of possible scenarios. Indeed, the current state-of-the-art for service-life prediction is at empiric and empiric–mechanistic levels, and does not provide any suitable answer even for a single failure criteria. Consequently, it is imperative to achieve qualified ...

Their treatment of already published data is commendable, and the knowledge gained will surely encourage the discussion of the SW Europe Variscides. However, in our opinion, Ribeiro et al.’s modeling and interpretation of the Ediacaran–Lower Ordovician ( 560–470 Ma) geodynamic evolution are of limited value.
