Variation in the IL28B gene is associated with sustained virologic response (SVR) to pegylated interferon plus ribavirin in hepatitis C virus (HCV)-monoinfected patients with genotype 1. Data on other genotypes and on patients coinfected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and HCV are more limited. We aimed to assess the predictive ability of variations in the single-nucleotide polymorphism rs12979860 for SVR in HIV/HCV-coinfected patients, regardless of HCV genotype. The rs12979860 genotype was ...

Background Unexpected cases of severe liver disease in HIV-infected patients have been reported and an association with didanosine (ddI) has been suggested. Transient elastography (TE) might detect patients harbouring such a condition. Our objective was to search for the presence of abnormal liver stiffness (LS) in a cohort of HIV-infected patients without HBV or HCV coinfection and to assess the related factors. Methods A cross-sectional prospective study was conducted. LS was assessed by TE in 258 ...

Background. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of sustained virologic response (SVR) to pegylated interferon (peg-IFN) plus ribavirin (RBV) on the incidence of liver-related complications and overall mortality in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)–infected patients with compensated hepatitis C virus (HCV)–related cirrhosis. Methods. We included in this prospective cohort study 166 coinfected patients with compensated cirrhosis, who received peg-IFN plus RBV, to assess the time from ...

Objective To assess the current frequency of ART-associated grade 3–4 transaminase elevations (TE) and grade 4 total bilirubin elevations (TBE) in HIV-infected patients with chronic hepatitis B and/or C, who start a new regimen of ART. We assess the efficacy of pegylated interferon (peg-IFN) with ribavirin (RBV) and the predictors of sustained virological response (SVR) among HIV/hepatitis C virus genotype 4 (HCV-4)-coinfected patients. Thirty-nine (31.5%) of 124 individuals with HCV-4 achieved SVR compared with 103 (22.7%) of 453 individuals with HCV genotype 1 (P=0.046). Only interleukin-28B (IL28B) genotype CC was independently associated with SVR in HIV/HCV-4-coinfected patients. The efficacy of peg-IFN with RBV in coinfected individuals ...

This study was aimed at evaluating the efficacy of beta-carotene in improving survival (S) and in disease-free survival (DFS) and reducing the incidence of second primary tumors (SPT) in patients with a radically treated stage I-II squamous head and neck tumors. Eligible patients were randomly allocated to receive beta-carotene (n=104) or no treatment (n=110). beta-carotene was administered at the dose of 75 mg/day for 3-month cycles within one month intercycle intervals for a 3-year period. Leprosy is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) plays a key role in the host response. Some association studies have implicated the single nucleotide polymorphism TNF -308G>A in leprosy susceptibility, but these results are still controversial. We first conducted 4 association studies (2639 individuals) that showed a protective effect of the -308A allele (odds ratio [OR] = 0.77; P = .005). Next, results of a meta-analysis reinforced this association after inclusion ...

Alternaria brown spot (ABS), caused by Alternaria alternata, is a serious disease affecting mandarin in humid and in semi-arid regions. The information available from Florida cannot be easily extrapolated to Mediterranean regions; thus, epidemiological studies were conducted during two consecutive years in Spain. Pathogenic isolates were found in the canopy and leaf litter and on weeds of the genus Sonchus. The pathogen survived in fallen immature leaves for up to 76 days, until complete leaf decay. ...

SUMMARY Objectives To report our 2 years of experience navigating the interference of anti‐CD38 monoclonal antibodies (MAs) in 33 patients and describe papain‐treated panels as a complementary method to dithiothreitol (DTT). Background Novel anti‐CD38 MAs are now approved or undergoing clinical trials to evaluate their activity in patients with multiple myeloma. A concern with the use of these drugs is that they interfere with blood bank tests in a group of patients who often require blood transfusions. ...

The amygdala and the hippocampus are two limbic structures that play a critical role in cognition and behavior, however their manual segmentation and that of their smaller nuclei/subfields in multicenter datasets is time consuming and difficult due to the low contrast of standard MRI.
