We have recently described the sequence of functional and morphologic changes occurring after a standardized sciatic nerve crush injury. An 8-week post-injury time was used because this end point is the far most used. Unexpectedly, both functional and morphological data revealed that animals had still not recovered to normal pre-injury levels. Therefore, the present study was designed in order to prolong the observation up to 12 weeks. Functional recovery was evaluated using sciatic functional index ( ...

Before in vivo testing, the PLGA 90:10 tubes were tested in vitro for water uptake and mass loss and compared with collagen sheets. The water uptake of the PLGA tubes was lower, and the mass loss was ...

When a limb suffers a fracture, rupture, or dislocation, it is traditionally immobilized with plaster. This may induce discomfort in the patient, as well as excessive itching and sweating, which creates the growth of bacteria, leading to an unhygienic environment and difficulty in keeping the injury clean during treatment. Furthermore, if the plaster remains for a long period, it may cause lesions in the joints and ligaments. To overcome all of these disadvantages, orthoses have emerged as important ...

Terrincho cheese is an uncooked, pressed cheese made from raw whole ovine milk from the “Churra da Terra Quente” breed. It requires a minimum ripening time of 30 d. A detailed evaluation of the effect of ripening time on the breakdown of the casein fractions, along with the formation of major breakdown products of casein hydrolysis, was monitored by HPLC to contribute to a more complete characterization of this product. In 30-d-old cheeses, only 20% of αS1-casein remained intact; the β-casein fraction ...

Abstract Chronic Venous Disorders (CVD) of the lower limbs are one of the most prevalent medical conditions, affecting 35% of adults in Europe and North America. Due to the exponential growth of the aging population and the worsening of CVD with age, it is expected that the healthcare costs and the resources needed for the treatment of CVD will increase in the coming years. The early diagnosis of CVD is fundamental in treatment planning, while the monitoring of its treatment is fundamental to assess ...
