Visual recognition requires to learn object models from training data. Commonly, training samples are annotated by marking only the bounding-box of objects, since this appears to be the best trade-off between labeling information and effectiveness. However, objects are typically not box-shaped. Thus, the usual parametrization of object hypotheses by only their location, scale and aspect ratio seems inappropriate since the box contains a significant amount of background clutter. Most important, however, ...

The red crab Pleuroncodes planipes is a resource with the potential for commercial exploitation. Red crabs have an elevated antioxidant capacity, which is subject to spatial and temporal variability. The objective of this study was to evaluate the variability of the oxidative stress indicators in P. planipes collected on four research cruises off the western coast of the Baja California Peninsula (Mexico). Superoxide radical (O2•–) production, lipid peroxidation, and antioxidant enzyme activities ...

The authors extend the definition of droplets in Ising and Potts models to the case of an external field different from zero. They also find exact relations between thermal properties and connectivity properties which show why, in mean field, the mean cluster size does not diverge as the susceptibility when the critical temperature is approached from below.

Consumers demand so-called natural in which additive and antioxidant preservatives are from natural origin. Research focuses in using extracts from plants and fruits that are rich in bioactive compounds such as phenolics and betalains, but these are also prone to interact with proteins and are exposed to suffer degradation during storage. Summary Solanum chrysotrichum cells were grown in a shake flask and a stirred tank bioreactor. Their growth kinetics and rheological and morphological behaviors were evaluated. The specific growth rate obtained in both systems was similar (0.09 day –1 ), but biomass yield achieved in shake flasks was 60 % higher than that in the fermentor. Culture broths exhibited non-Newtonian and shear-thinning characteristics, which can be simulated by the Ostwald de Waele model (power law). Results show that the pseudoplasticity ...

Various factors influence both forms of physical activity, including job stress and job satisfaction, but the associations found are weak, and the need for new studies in large populations is emphasized. Fishing is an important activity contributing to countries' economy and food security worldwide. Despite efforts towards sustainability, fisheries frequently face overexploitation situations, particularly small-scale fisheries (SSF) whose management needs to be improved, according to the United Nations 2030 agenda. Hough voting methods efficiently handle the high complexity of multi-scale, category-level object detection in cluttered scenes. The primary weakness of this approach is however that mutually dependent local observations are independently voting for intrinsically global object properties such as object scale. All the votes are added up to obtain object hypotheses. The assumption is thus that object hypotheses are a sum of independent part votes. Popular representation schemes are, however, based ...

European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) are severely affected by rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD). Caused by a lagovirus, the disease leads to losses in the rabbit industry and has implications for wildlife conservation. Past RHD outbreaks have been caused by GI.1/RHDV genotype viruses. A new virus belonging to the GI.2/RHDV2/b genotype emerged in 2010, quickly spreading and replacing the former in several countries; however, limited data are available on its pathogenicity and epidemiological factors. ...

In this work, we developed a Selective Dynamic Sampling Approach (SDSA) to deal with the class imbalance problem. It is based on the idea of using only the most appropriate samples during the neural network training stage. The “average samples”are the best to train the neural network, they are neither hard, nor easy to learn, and they could improve the classifier performance. The experimental results show that the proposed method is a successful method to deal with the two-class imbalance problem. ...

The European wild rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) is a key prey species on the Iberian Peninsula, and several predator species that are at risk of extinction are dependent on them as prey. Birth weight (BW) is an important indicator for newborn health. Both high and low BW is associated with increased risks for adult metabolic diseases. AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase), mTOR (mechanistic target of rapamycin), and insulin/IGF1 (insulin-like growth factor 1) pathways may function as placental sensors of maternal hormonal and nutritional status. However, the physiological role of these pathways in placenta has not been completely elucidated. To evaluate expression and activation of AMPK, ...
