Preterm birth continues to be one of the main causes of neonatal morbidity and mortality. The objective of the present study was to identify risk factors for preterm birth in São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil. The sample consisted of hospital births at 10 public and private hospitals from March 1, 1997 to February 28, 1998. A total of 2,443 live births were randomly selected, excluding multiple deliveries and stillbirths. Preterm birth rate in São Luís was 12.7%. Risk factors for preterm delivery were ...

Background: Coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) can develop into a severe respiratory syndrome that results in up to 40% mortality. Acute lung inflammatory edema is a major pathological finding in autopsies explaining O2 diffusion failure and hypoxemia. Only dexamethasone has been shown to reduce mortality in severe cases, further supporting a role for inflammation in disease severity. SARS-CoV-2 enters cells employing angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) as a receptor, which is highly expressed in ...

Self-leveling mortar (SLM) is a special mortar that can flow and fill under its own weight without the need for any compaction energy. To meet these characteristics and to ensure their stability (no segregation and exudation) these mortars require, in addition to proper mixing design and the use of water reducing assets, a large quantity of fines or viscosity modifying additives, which raises the cost for the production. The use of industrial by products such as sugar-cane bagasse ash (SCBA) is an ...

Previous theoretical works showed that all pure two-qubit entangled states can generate one bit of local randomness and can be self-tested through the violation of proper Bell inequalities. We report an experiment in which nearly pure partially entangled states of photonic qubits are produced to investigate these tasks in a practical scenario. We show that small deviations from the ideal situation make low entangled states impractical to self-testing and randomness generation using the available ...

Achalasia is a primary esophageal motor disorder with a variety of causes. It is most common in Central and South America, where Chagas disease is endemic. In addition to the infectious etiology, achalasia can be idiopathic, autoimmune, or drug induced. It is an incurable, progressive condition that destroys the intramural nerve plexus, causing aperistalsis of the esophageal body and impaired relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter. The literature on the treatment of achalasia comparing pneumatic ...

To design resistance management strategies, we selected and characterized the resistance to MON89034 × TC1507 × NK603 maize in a field-derived strain of FAW and investigated fitness costs associated with resistance. Kojic acid (KA) is a fungal metabolite used as a topical treatment skin-whitening cosmetic agent for melasma in humans; however its potential as an anti-leishmanial agent is unknown. Chemotherapy is one of the most effective treatments for Leishmaniasis. However, the drugs available are expensive, invasive, require long-term treatment and have severe side effects. Thus, the development of new effective leishmanicidal agents is a necessity. In this study we investigated the anti-leishmanial effect ...

NOx emission standards are becoming stringiest over the world especially for heavy-duty vehicles. To comply with current and future regulations some vehicle manufacturers are adopting exhaust aftertreatment systems known as Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). However, Va is listed on the California Proposition 65 List as potentially causing cancer and alternatives are being studied. This paper presents a model based ...

This work presents an analytical modelling of mass transfer in spheroidal solids using a liquid diffusion model. The diffusion equation, written in cylindrical coordinates, is solved using the Galerkin method with a constant diffusion coefficient and an equilibrium boundary condition at the surface of the solid. Results on the drying kinetics, and moisture content distribution in the solids are presented and analysed. The iso-concentration lines for moisture content show that the drying process ...

We report the synthesis, characterization and spectroscopic properties of the compound Eu(thenoyltrifluoroacetonate), 2(dibenzyl sulfoxide) which is highly luminescent under UV excitation. Experimental and theoretical results on ligand field parameters, 4f-4f intensities and intramolecular energy transfer processes are described. The characteristic emission spectrum of the Eu3+ ion shows a very high intensity for the hypersensitive 5D0 → 7F2 transition, pointing to a highly polarizable chemical environment ...

A strain of Bacteroides fragilis, isolated from the marmoset Callithrix penicillata, produced protein(s) with bacteriocin activity (fragicilin). Two active fractions (36 and 150 kDa) were isolated by chromatography. The bacteriocin exhibited iso- and heteroantagonism. It remained stable between pH 3 and 10 and at 60 degrees C for 24 h. Pronase, trypsin, proteinase K and type VII protease inactivated the bacteriocin, giving evidence of its protein nature.

Termite nests are microenvironments rich in organic matter and fauna, and are home to several groups of organisms such as lichens and fungi. Termite species from the genus Inquilinitermes live in the nests of Constrictotermes cyphergaster and feed on the feces of their host, which is a dark material (black mass) rich in lignin and cellulose.
