Generation and availability of agro-industrial waste in the world present an opportunity to obtain raw materials for the development of new sustainable materials. In order to contribute to the dissemination of using agro-industrial residues in lignocellulosic particleboard (eco-particleboard) manufacturing, this work aimed to investigate the influence of a chemical mercerization treatment on the physical and mechanical properties of eco-particleboards. The treatment consisted of 0.5% sodium hydroxide ( ...

Granular cell tumor (GCT) is an uncommon benign neoplasm of soft tissue that characteristically affects the oral cavity, with increased frequency in the tongue. In this paper, we report a multicentric GCT affecting a 41-year-old black woman, with nodules in perineum, groin, vulva, tongue and lip. Some of these lesions were surgically resected, but in a six-year follow-up, new primary lesions and recurrences were observed. In addition, the patient opted to do not remove some of these lesions, but ...

Increased levels of inflammatory biomarkers such as interleukin-6 (IL-6), 10 (IL-10), 1β (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) are associated with arterial stiffness in hypertension. Indeed, resistant hypertension (RHTN) leads to unfavorable prognosis attributed to poor blood pressure (BP) control and target organ damage. This study evaluated the potential impact of inflammatory biomarkers on arterial stiffness in RHTN.In this cross-sectional study, 32 RHTN, ...

The bioaccumulation of atrazine and its toxicity were evaluated for the cyanobacterium Microcystis novacekii. Cyanobacterial cultures were grown in WC culture medium with atrazine at 50, 250 and 500 μg L(-1). After 96 hours of exposure, 27.2% of the atrazine had been removed from the culture supernatant. Spontaneous degradation was found to be insignificant (< 9% at 500 μg L(-1)), indicating a high efficiency for the bioaccumulation of atrazine by M. novacekii. There were no atrazine metabolites detected ...

Bovine botulism is a fatal disease that is caused by botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs) produced by Clostridium botulinum serotypes C and D and that causes great economic losses, with nearly 100% lethality during outbreaks. It has also been considered a potential source of human food-borne illness in many countries. Vaccination has been reported to be the most effective way to control bovine botulism. However, the commercially available toxoid-based vaccines are difficult and hazardous to produce. Neutralizing ...

At the time of diagnosis, three patients reported urban activities and six were agricultural workers. None of the patients were HIV-positive. All nine patients had multiple oral lesions of some kind – so-called mulberry-like (Figure 1). Gingival lesions were the most common manifestation and were present in seven cases. The tongue ...

X-chromosome inactivation (XCI) is the epigenetic transcriptional silencing of an X-chromosome during the early stages of embryonic development in female eutherian mammals. XCI assures monoallelic expression in each cell and compensation for dosage-sensitive X-linked genes between females (XX) and males (XY). DNA methylation at the carbon-5 position of the cytosine pyrimidine ring in the context of a CpG dinucleotide sequence (5meCpG) in promoter regions is a key epigenetic marker for transcriptional ...

Several studies have been suggesting annexin A1 protein as an active player in tumorigenesis of many organs. Nevertheless, its tumor biomarker role has been mainly studied in tissues by immunohistochemistry or cell culture. Hence, in this investigation, the peripheral blood from 27 oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients and 25 negative control individuals were examined by quantitative real-time PCR. Down-regulated ANXA1 expression at mRNA level was observed in OSCC samples (p = 0.026). Significantly ...

Summary The so-called ablepharon macrostomia syndrome is an extremely rare congenital condition that includes abnormal ears, an enlarged, fishlike mouth, absence of lanugo, redundant skin, and vertical shortening of all eyelids. Only four cases have been described so far. In these cases the nature of the eyelid anomalies has not been clearly defined. We report one more case showing that the condition is better described as a severe microblepharon because only the anterior lamella of the eyelids ...
