In this study, we describe the cDNA cloning, sequencing, and 3-D structure of the allergen hyaluronidase from Polybia paulista venom (Pp-Hyal). Using a proteomic approach, the native form of Pp-Hyal was purified to homogeneity and used to produce a Pp-specific polyclonal antibody. The results revealed that Pp-Hyal can be classified as a glycosyl hydrolase and that the full-length Pp-Hyal cDNA (1315 bp; GI: 302201582) is similar (80-90%) to hyaluronidase from the venoms of endemic Northern wasp species. ...

The simultaneous circulation of Dengue virus (DENV), Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) and Zika virus (ZIKV) arboviruses have placed Brazil among the main worldwide endemic areas. Brazilian Northeast region concentrates the highest incidence of infections caused by CHIKV and ZIKV. In Maranhão, the second biggest northeastern state, there are cases of human infections caused by these three arboviruses and presence of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus vectors. In this context, this study aimed to investigate ...

Abstract The genus Haemagogus (Diptera: Culicidae) comprises species of great epidemiological relevance, involved in transmission cycles of the Yellow fever virus and other arboviruses in South America. So far, only Haemagogus janthinomys has complete mitochondrial sequences available. Given the unavailability of information related to aspects of the evolutionary biology and molecular taxonomy of this genus, we report here, the first sequencing of the mitogenomes of Haemagogus albomaculatus , Haemagogus ...

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) was first reported in Brazil in 2014 and, after it spread countrywide, an outbreak of febrile illness with reports of arthralgia happened in the municipality of Xinguara, Pará, Brazil in 2017, indicating the virus' circulation. Here, we aimed to investigate CHIKV in mosquito vectors collected during an active surveillance of virus isolation in cell culture by using molecular detection and viral genome sequencing. A total of 492 Aedes, Culex and Mansonia mosquitoes were collected ...

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a disturbing experience of proximity to death. As the pandemic goes on, the mixed experience of loss of a close family or friends added to the unpredictability of economic changes and the social isolation can elicit negative manifestations of affection, and psychological distress. The whole experience negatively affects individuals with or without previous mental health disorders. Objective: The present study is a cohort aimed to analyze the effect of the salience ...

Abstract Context.—The behavior of adrenocortical tumors (ACTs) is usually difficult to establish in childhood, and the role of immunomarkers in predicting outcome has not yet been elucidated. Objective.—To investigate the relationship between clinical, pathologic, and immunohistochemical findings and prognosis in a series of children with ACTs. Patients and Methods.—Clinical data were evaluated retrospectively in 33 children with ACTs, including age at diagnosis, sex, time between first symptoms ...

The Culicidae family is distributed worldwide and comprises about 3587 species subdivided into the subfamilies Anophelinae and Culicinae. This is the first description of complete mitochondrial DNA sequences from Aedes fluviatilis, Aedeomyia squamipennis, Coquillettidia nigricans, Psorophora albipes, and Psorophora ferox. The mitogenomes showed an average length of 15,046 pb and 78.02% AT content, comprising 37 functional subunits (13 protein coding genes, 22 tRNAs, and two rRNAs). The most common ...

Abstract Background There are several groups of viruses including Insect Specific Viruses (ISV) such as the taxon Negevirus , a group of viruses phylogenetically related to plant viruses. Negeviruses replicate in mosquito cells, but not in vertebrate cells. Methods Pools of hematophagous arthropods were inoculated in Vero and C6/36 cells. The cells were observed to detect possible cytopathic effect. Then, indirect immunofluorescence, RT-PCR, and nucleotide sequencing were performed. Results Seven samples ...

Since 1989, the Mathematics Education Project (PmatE–Projecto Matemática Ensino) has developed several strategies to improve the success of students in Mathematics. The most important of these are mathematical games for all grades above primary school. The online evaluation of Mathematics subjects is one of PmatE's goals. The implementation of an on-line diagnosis test–TDmat (Teste Diagnóstico de Matemática), mandatory for all students enrolling for the first time in Science and Engineering courses ...

Breu Branco virus (BE AR 492347) was isolated from Anopheles (Nyssorhynchus) triannulatus mosquitoes captured in Tucuruí, Pará State, northern Brazil, in 1988. No cross-reactivity by complement-fixation tests was observed between Breu Branco virus and other known arboviruses. Results of electron microscopy and physicochemical tests suggested that Breu Branco virus may be a member of the family Reoviridae. In order to elucidate its taxonomic status, a comprehensive genetic characterization was conducted ...

Dual human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) 1 and HIV-2 superinfections are rare but challenging. A HIV-1-infected patient receiving effective antiretroviral therapy was investigated for a severe CD4+ cell count decline. HIV-2 superinfection was diagnosed and genotypic test revealed mutations conferring resistance to most drug class, limiting options for treatment.

ABSTRACT We present the case of a male patient not vaccinated against hepatitis B virus (HBV) and with reactivity to a surface antibody who, after immunosuppression for a multiple myeloma, had HBV reactivation. Pharmacological HBV suppression was tried, but viremia could not be suppressed. Production-detection core mutations or immunity issues can explain this clinical phenomenon.
