Abstract The study of free‐living felids requires the capture of individuals from the wild to collect biological samples and to equip them with GPS‐satellite collars for telemetry monitoring. The traditional methods used by researchers to capture wild felids are box traps and trained hounds, both of which have disadvantages. We present the description of the foot snare and the adaptations required for the capture of jaguars and cougars, showing its efficiency. The foot snare consists of a combination ...

Trypanosoma cruzi, the agent of Chagas disease, is genetically classified into two major evolutionary lineages, T. cruzi I and T. cruzi II. In Southern American Cone countries it is T cruzi II which causes most cases of severe chronic Chagas disease. Contrary to this, we isolated T. cruzi I nested in endomyocardial biopsies of a chronic chagasic patient with end-stage heart failure. Our finding should alert clinicians to the possibility of severe Chagas disease in all regions where T. cruzi circulates, ...

The Spike protein (S protein) is a critical component in the infection of the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). The objective of this work was to evaluate whether peptides from S protein could cause negative impact in the aquatic animals. The aquatic toxicity of SARS-CoV-2 Spike protein peptides derivatives has been evaluated in tadpoles (n = 50 tadpoles/5 replicates of 10 animals) from species Physalaemus cuvieri (Leptodactylidae). After synthesis, purification, and characterization of peptides (PSDP2001, ...

ABSTRACT Salt-tolerant plants are important to cope with salinity and/or sodicity problems in semiarid regions. The dwarf coconut palm (Cocos nucifera L.) has emerged as a salt-tolerant crop once established. However, little is known about the mechanisms that contribute to the survival of coconut seedlings under salinity stress. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of saline water on morpho-physiological and biochemical responses of dwarf coconut seedlings. Treatments were composed of five levels ...

One of the most applied strategies in tissue engineering consists in the development of 3D porous scaffolds with similar composition to the specific tissue. In fact, the microstructure of the scaffolds influences the final structure of the in growing tissue. In this study, multi-layered PCL scaffolds were produced with modified Fab@home FDM printer in order to analyze the influence of the extrusion technology (filament or powder extrusion head) and of the process parameters on the deposited material. ...

Background Over the last century the incidence of cutaneous melanoma has increased worldwide, a trend that has also been observed in Brazil. The identified risk factors for melanoma include the pattern of sun exposure, family history, and certain phenotypic features. In addition, the incidence of melanoma might be influenced by ethnicity. Like many countries, Brazil has high immigration rates and consequently a heterogenous population. However, Brazil is unique among such countries in that the ethnic ...

This work contemplates the development and application of a probabilistic methodology for the Technical and Non-Technical Losses estimation in a feeder in the presence of load variations of a large distribution system. Due to such variations in load, the feeder losses are also characterized as random variables which are related to statistical moments, such as mean and variance. Comparing the Measured Energy consumption in the feeder with the Billed Energy by the utility plus the Technical Losses, ...

UV radiation is the major environmental factor related to development of cutaneous melanoma. Besides sun exposure and the influence of latitude, some host characteristics such as skin phototype and hair and eye color are also risk factors for melanoma. Polymorphisms in DNA repair genes could be good candidates for susceptibility genes, mainly in geographical regions exposed to high solar radiation. Evaluate the role of host characteristics and DNA repair polymorphism in melanoma risk in Brazil. ...

Buffalo are an economically important source for meat and milk production, especially in Brazil. However, important aspects of their biology remain unknown thus far. Herein, we describe the reproductive characteristics of male Murrah buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) raised under extensive management conditions by applying biometrics associated with testicular weight. We analyzed seven males, divided into two groups: G1, which consisted of four 18-month-old animals, and G2, which consisted of three 24-month- ...

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a major environmental risk factor to the development of cutaneous melanoma as it induces pyrimidine dimers in DNA. Genes that exert their function by arresting the cell cycle are critical to avoid carcinogenic mutations, allowing the processing of DNA repair systems. Capybaras are the primary hosts of Amblyomma sculptum tick, vectors of Rickettsia rickettsia bacteria, and the zoonotic agent of Brazilian Spotted Fever (BSF). In this context, contraceptive methods have been suggested for population control in order to reduce the number of free-ranging capybaras cohabiting with humans in urban and rural areas and acting as disease amplifiers. To maintain the group's expected behavior and social hierarchy, sterilization techniques that preserve the gonads are recommended. ...

Translocations involving the short arm of chromosome 12 are frequent events among patients with various hematologic malignancies. In approximately half of these patients, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis has shown that the breakpoints are clustered within the ETS-variant gene 6 (ETV6) at 12p13, leading to its fusion with a variety of partner genes on different chromosomes. The remaining patients have breakpoints centromeric or telomeric to ETV6 or, less frequently, interstitial 12p13 ...
