This paper proposes an adaptive Biased Random-key Genetic Algorithm (A-BRKGA), a new method with on-line parameter control for combinatorial optimization problems. A-BRKGA has only one problem-dependent component, the decoder and all other parts can be reused. To control diversification and intensification, a novel adaptive strategy for parameter tuning is introduced. This strategy is based on deterministic rules and self-adaptive schemes. For exploitation of specific regions of the solution space ...

This work aimed to obtain by extrusion two aluminum alloys, 7108 and 7046. The microstructural characterized at each stage of the manufacturing process and the mechanical fatigue behavior of the extruded profile were evaluated. The aluminum alloys in the as-casted condition exhibited an interdendritic microsegregation inside the grains, with intermetallic phases precipitated on the grain boundaries. In the homogenization of the billets of the AA7108 and AA7046, the precipitated phases dissolved. ...

Abstract The heartwood formation process is little known in fast growing plantation woods. Therefore, the aims of this study were to determine how planting spacing and tree age affect the formation and proportion of heartwood and sapwood, as well as the density of eucalyptus wood. Trees from a eucalyptus clonal plantation ( Eucalyptus grandis × E. urophylla hybrid) cultivated in three spacings (3 × 1, 3 × 2 and 3 × 3 m) were sampled at 14, 27, 32, 53, 64 and 76 months of age. Heartwood percentage was quantified ...

Cryptococcosis is an infection caused by the encapsulated yeast Cryptococcus neoformans and the most afflicted sites are lung, skin and central nervous system. A range of studies had reported that photodynamic therapy (PDT) can inactivate yeast cells; however, the in vivo experimental models of cryptococcosis photoinactivation are not commonly reported. The aim of this study was to investigate the ability of methylene blue (MB) combined with a low-power red laser to inactivate Cryptococcus neoformans ...

Abstract The allochthonous detritus that accumulates in the substrate of streams is used by aquatic invertebrate shredders for shelter and food. Shredders are considered rare in tropical systems, and little information is available about the role of density effects and predation risk (associated with the perception of predators by prey) in relationship to the resources used by these organisms. The aim of this study was to examine experimentally the effects of increased predation risk and of the density ...

Cork oaks show a high capacity of bud sprouting as a response to injury, which is important for species survival when dealing with external factors, such as drought or fires. The characterization of the cork oak transcriptome involved in the different stages of bud sprouting is essential to understanding the mechanisms involved in these processes. In this study, the transcriptional profile of different stages of bud sprouting, namely (1) dormant bud and (2) bud swollen, vs. (3) red bud and (4) open ...
