The in vitro cytotoxic potential of yangambin was evaluated. Yangambin is a pharmacologically active furofuran lignan obtained from the leaves of Ocotea duckei. It is the major compound from the lignoids fraction. Yangambin presented low cytotoxicity in all in vitro models analyzed. Its cytotoxicity to murine macrophages was measured by the Trypan blue dye exclusion test and MTT reduction assay, resulting in high CC 50 values of 187.0 μg/mL (383.3 μm) and 246.7 μg/mL (504.3 μm), respectively. The interaction of a potent percutaneous penetration enhancer, 1,8-cineole, with the stratum corneum (SC) and DPPC membranes was investigated by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR) of spin-labeled analogs of stearic acid (5-DSA) and androstanol (ASL). The EPR spectra of lipid derivatives spin probes structured in stratum corneum tissue of neonatal rat containing of 0.1–10% (v/v) 1,8-cineole in the solvent indicate an abrupt increase in membrane fluidity at around 1% 1,8-cineole. These ...

The EPR spectra of the positional isomers n-doxyl stearic acids (n-DSA), with n = 5, 12 and 16, and 5-doxyl methyl stearate (5-DMS) structured in the lipid domain of intact stratum corneum (SC), are characterized by the thermodynamic equilibrium of two distinct spectral components provided by two different motional states of the spin-labeled chains. A two-component model used in the EPR spectra simulations provided the relative populations of the components, allowing for the calculation of the thermodynamic ...

The aim of the present investigation was to evaluate the angiogenesis on dorsal cutaneous wounds in a rodent model treated with λ660 nm laser light. New vessel formation is a multistep process involving vessel sprouting, endothelial cell migration, proliferation and tube formation. Although several in vivo studies have shown that laser phototherapy influences tissue repair, a fully understanding of angiogenesis mechanisms are not yet known. Twenty-four young adult male Wistar rats weighing between ...

No carcinogenesis or mutagenesis studies have been carried out with etomidate. The current study showed that etomidate has weak cytotoxic potential after 48 h exposure in human lymphocytes and has no hemolytic activity. The weak cytotoxicity seems to be related with redox imbalance of etomidate (40.9 and 81.9 μM) treated lymphocytes. At both etomidate concentrations, a slight decrease of the levels of GSH intracellular content and a significant increase in the amount of carbonylated proteins were ...

These systems were prepared by spontaneous emulsification with quantities of TTO ranging from 0% to 0.5% w/w, at a fixed surfactant concentration (2% w/w). The dispersed structures usually found in microemulsions (oil-swollen micelles) and emulsions (oil droplets) were produced under these experimental conditions. ...

EPR spectra of 5- and 16-doxyl stearic acid nitroxide probes (5-DSA and 16-DSA, respectively) bound to bovine serum albumin (BSA) revealed that in the presence of ionic surfactants, at least, two label populations coexist in equilibrium. The rotational correlation times (tau) indicated that component 1 displays a more restricted mobility state, associated to the spin labels bound to the protein; the less immobilized component 2 is due to label localization in the surfactant aggregates. For both probes, ...

Evidence is also scarce on the association between residual symptoms, particularly headache, and the recanalization grade. The mosquito-borne viruses dengue (DENV), Zika (ZIKV), and chikungunya (CHIKV), now co-endemic in the Americas, pose growing threats to health worldwide. However, it remains unclear whether there exist interactions between these viruses that could shape their epidemiology. Spatiotemporal transmission dynamics of DENV, ZIKV, and CHIKV were analyzed using georeferenced ...

Background After being eliminated during the 1950s, dengue reemerged in Brazil in the 1980s. Since then, incidence of the disease has increased, as serotypes move within and between cities. The co-circulation of multiple serotypes contributes to cycles of epidemic and interepidemic years, and a seasonal pattern of transmission is observed annually. Little is known regarding possible differences in the epidemiology of dengue under epidemic and interepidemic scenarios. This study addresses this gap ...
