The study of fungal species evolved radically with the development of molecular techniques and produced new evidence to understand specific fungal mechanisms such as the production of toxic secondary metabolites. Taking advantage of these technologies to improve food safety, the molecular study of toxinogenic species can help elucidate the mechanisms underlying toxin production and enable the development of new effective strategies to control fungal toxicity. Numerous studies have been made on genes ...

Meghan A. Duffy, Spencer R. Hall, Carla E. Cáceres, Anthony R. Ives,

Why do epidemics end? This simple question has puzzled ecologists and epidemiologists for decades. Early explanations focused on drops in host density arising from highly virulent parasites and, later, on the effects of acquired immunity. More recently, however, two additional epidemic‐ending mechanisms have surfaced: environmental change (including seasonality) and rapid evolution of increased resistance of hosts to infection. Both mechanisms, via either decreasing seasonal temperatures or evolution ...

Colistin is an antibiotic of last resort for treating serious Gram-negative bacterial infections. However, the misuse of colistin, especially as an animal growth promoter, has contributed to increasing antimicrobial resistance, mediated mainly through plasmid transfer of the mcr-1 gene. This study assessed the prevalence of phenotypic and molecular colistin resistance in Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae in Ecuador in healthy humans and their chickens and pigs.Fecal samples were collected ...

Uveal melanoma is a rare subtype of melanoma, accounting for only 3–5% of all melanoma cases in the USA. Although fewer than 4% of uveal melanoma patients present with metastasis at diagnosis, approximately half will develop metastasis, more than 90% of which disseminate to the liver. Infrequently, a number of malignancies can lead to leptomeningeal metastases, a devastating and terminal complication. In this case report, we present an exceedingly rare case of a patient with uveal melanoma who developed ...

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of vision loss in developed countries. While linked to genetic polymorphisms in the complement pathway, there are many individuals with high risk alleles that do not develop AMD, suggesting that other 'modifiers' may be involved. Mitochondrial (mt) haplogroups, defined by accumulations of specific mtDNA single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) which represent population origins, may be one such modifier. J haplogroup has been associated with ...

The geographic origins of populations can be identified by their maternally inherited mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplogroups. This study compared human cybrids (cytoplasmic hybrids), which are cell lines with identical nuclei but mitochondria from different individuals with mtDNA from either the H haplogroup or L haplogroup backgrounds. The most common European haplogroup is H while individuals of maternal African origin are of the L haplogroup. Despite lower mtDNA copy numbers, L cybrids had higher ...

Mitochondrial (mt) DNA can be classified into haplogroups representing different geographic and/or racial origins of populations. The H haplogroup is protective against age-related macular degeneration (AMD), while the J haplogroup is high risk for AMD. In the present study, we performed comparison analyses of human retinal cell cybrids, which possess identical nuclei, but mtDNA from subjects with either the H or J haplogroups, and demonstrate differences in total global methylation, and expression ...

Abstract Introduction Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is the most common cause of respiratory failure among critically ill subjects, sepsis and severe bacterial pneumonia being its most common causes. The only interventions that have proven beneficial are protective ventilation strategies and fluid conservation approaches. New therapies are needed to address this common clinical problem. Peripheral surgical trauma can trigger neuroinflammation and ensuing neurological complications, such as delirium. The mechanisms whereby surgery contributes to postoperative neuroinflammation remain unclear and without effective therapies. Here, we developed a microfluidic-assisted blood-brain barrier (BBB) device and tested the effects of omega-3 fatty acids on neuroimmune interactions after orthopaedic surgery.A microfluidic-assisted BBB device was established using primary human cells. Prevalence of SLE varies among studies, being influenced by study design, geographical area and ethnicity. Data about the prevalence of SLE in Spain are scarce. In the EPISER2016 study, promoted by the Spanish Society of Rheumatology, the prevalence estimate of SLE in the general adult population in Spain has been updated and its association with sociodemographic, anthropometric and lifestyle variables has been explored.Population-based multicentre cross-sectional study, with multistage stratified ...

Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are an important diagnostic tool for understanding the metastatic process and the development of cancer. This review covers the background, relevance, and potential limitations of CTCs as a measurement of cancer progression and how information derived from CTCs may affect treatment efficacy. It also highlights the difficulties of characterizing these rare cells due to the limited cell surface molecules unique to CTCs and each particular type of cancer. The analysis of ...

Carbon steel is one of the most used construction materials and makes up the bulk of steel production in the world. However, this alloy is vulnerable to corrosion, which reduces its safety and costs trillions of dollars worldwide in terms of corrosion protection and infrastructure maintenance. Corrosion inhibitors are among the cheapest and most effective methods to minimize corrosion and maximize the shelf life of this ubiquitous alloy; however, they are often harmful to the environment. Currently ...
