Superheated water under pressure between 125 and 175 °C has been shown to rapidly extract the oxygenated fragrance and flavor compounds from Rosmarinus officinalis, while the monoterpenes are extracted slowly, and only very small amounts of the sesquiterpenes, waxes, and lipids are removed. The eventual yields of oxygenated compounds are higher than are obtained by steam distillation. Although larger amounts of water are needed for extraction by superheated water, the energy costs are competitive ...

Inhibiting the protein–protein interaction (PPI) between the transcription factor Nrf2 and its repressor protein Keap1 has emerged as a promising strategy to target oxidative stress in diseases, including central nervous system (CNS) disorders. Numerous non-covalent small-molecule Keap1−Nrf2 PPI inhibitors have been reported to date, but many feature suboptimal physicochemical properties for permeating the blood–brain barrier, while others contain problematic structural moieties. Here, we present ...

Targeting the protein–protein interaction (PPI) between nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1) is a potential therapeutic strategy to control diseases involving oxidative stress. Here, six classes of known small-molecule Keap1–Nrf2 PPI inhibitors were dissected into 77 fragments in a fragment-based deconstruction reconstruction (FBDR) study and tested in four orthogonal assays. This gave 17 fragment hits of which six were shown by X-ray crystallography ...

A clinical guideline is a document with the aim of guiding decisions based on evidence regarding diagnosis, management and treatment in specific areas of healthcare. Specific to rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs), adherence to clinical guidelines recommendations impacts the outcomes of people with these diseases. However, currently, the implementation of recommendations is less than optimal in rheumatology. The WHO has described the implementation of evidence-based recommendations as one ...

Adult-onset inflammatory syndromes often manifest with overlapping clinical features. Variants in ubiquitin-related genes, previously implicated in autoinflammatory disease, may define new disorders. We analyzed peripheral-blood exome sequence data independent of clinical phenotype and inheritance pattern to identify deleterious mutations in ubiquitin-related genes. Sanger sequencing, immunoblotting, immunohistochemical testing, flow cytometry, and transcriptome and cytokine profiling were performed. ...

Abstract The measurement of macular pigment optical density (MPOD) in the eye is often carried out using optical techniques based on heterochromatic flicker photometry (HFP). These require the use of two spectrally‐narrow beams, one at the wavelength of maximum absorption of the macular pigment (MP) and the other in the long wavelength region of the visible spectrum where MP absorption is negligible. A new technique for the measurement of MPOD spatial profiles has been developed by overcoming the current ...

Various physical, chemical, and physiological processes, including canopy structure, impact surface reflectance. Remote sensing aims to derive ecosystem properties and their functional relationships, given these impacts. Ollinger et al. (1) do not distinguish between the forward and inverse problems in radiative transfer and, hence, misrepresent our results (2). The authors also suggest our conclusions are based on a subset of data from ref. 3, which is not the case.

A major cause of cell death caused by genotoxic stress is thought to be due to the depletion of NAD+ from the nucleus and the cytoplasm. Here we show that NAD+ levels in mitochondria remain at physiological levels following genotoxic stress and can maintain cell viability even when nuclear and cytoplasmic pools of NAD+ are depleted. Rodents fasted for 48 hr show increased levels of the NAD+ biosynthetic enzyme Nampt and a concomitant increase in mitochondrial NAD+. Increased Nampt provides protection ...

A strong positive correlation between vegetation canopy bidirectional reflectance factor (BRF) in the near infrared (NIR) spectral region and foliar mass-based nitrogen concentration (%N) has been reported in some temperate and boreal forests. The status of these arthropods in the subsequent cash crop depends on several factors such as CC species, management, biomass production, and weather conditions.

The wheat stem maggot (Meromyza americana Fitch) (WSM) is a minor pest of wheat, rye, and other grasses. In 2017, growers in Nebraska reported dead center whorls and excessive tillering in early-season cornfields that followed wheat or rye terminated after planting corn. A survey was conducted to evaluate the risk factors for this insect in cover crop to corn transition systems. In each field, management practices and the percentage of injured plants were recorded. Symptomatic corn plants were collected ...

The eumusc.net project is a European Union (EU) commission and European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR)funded project that aims to facilitate equal standards for musculoskeletal health in all EU countries. One work-package was to develop evidence-based and patient-centred standards of care (SOC), for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) understandable for patients and professionals across Europe.A review of documents covering clinical practice 'guidelines' and SOC for RA was conducted. The obtained documents ...

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contamination has a negative impact on ecosystems. PAHs are a large group of toxins with two or more benzene rings that are persistent in the environment. Some PAHs can be cytotoxic, teratogenic, and/or carcinogenic. In the bacterium Pseudomonas, PAHs can be modified by dioxygenases, which increase the reactivity of PAHs. We hypothesize that some plant dioxygenases are capable of PAH biodegradation. Herein, we investigate the involvement of Arabidopsis thaliana ...

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are environmental contaminants with cytotoxic, teratogenic and carcinogenic properties. Bioremediation studies with bacteria have led to the identification of dioxygenases (DOXs) in the first step to degrade these recalcitrant compounds. In this study, we characterized the role of the Arabidopsis thaliana AT5G05600, a putative DOX of the flavonol synthase family, in the transformation of PAHs. Phenotypic analysis of loss-of-function mutant lines showed that ...

Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided therapy of gastric varices, first reported as the use of a cyanoacrylate (CYA) injection [1], now includes the deployment of coils without CYA [2] and the combined method, involving deployment of one to two coils followed by an injection of CYA [3]. Regardless of the method used, EUS-guided therapy of gastric varices is increasingly performed because of its safety profile and accuracy. EUS-guided angiography can be used to assess fluidodynamics, the anatomy of gastric ...
