Background Infection with Helicobacter pylori is the main cause of peptic-ulcer disease. Treatment of this infection might lower the prevalence of dyspepsia in the community and improve quality of life. We investigated this possibility in a double-blind randomised controlled trial. Methods Individuals aged 40–49 years were randomly selected from the lists of 36 primary-care centres. A researcher interviewed participants with a validated dyspepsia questionnaire and the psychological general wellbeing ...

We have developed methods for evaluating muscle function in the intact rat heart in situ using a contractility index (dP/dt)P-1, calculated from left ventricular pressure derivative-left ventricular pressure loop plots. Aortic flow measurements were also taken to further characterize in situ rat heart function. The preparation remained functionally stable and was within physiological blood gas and pH limits for at least 30 min following surgical procedures. The contractility index was not influenced ...

Early stages of lineage divergence in insect herbivores are often related to shifts in host plant use and divergence in mating capabilities, which may lead to sexual isolation of populations of herbivorous insects. We examined host preferences, degree of differentiation in mate choice, and divergence in cuticular morphology using near-infrared spectroscopy in the grasshopper Hesperotettix viridis aiming to understand lineage divergence. In Kansas (USA), H. viridis is an oligophagous species feeding ...

The glucocorticoid receptor (NR3C1, also known as GR) binds to specific DNA sequences and directly induces transcription of anti-inflammatory genes that contribute to cytokine repression, frequently in cooperation with NF-kB. Whether inflammatory repression also occurs through local interactions between GR and inflammatory gene regulatory elements has been controversial. Here, using global run-on sequencing (GRO-seq) in human airway epithelial cells, we show that glucocorticoid signaling represses ...

The heterogeneity of respirable particulates and compounds complicates our understanding of transcriptional responses to air pollution. Here, we address this by applying precision nuclear run-on sequencing and the assay for transposase-accessible chromatin sequencing to measure nascent transcription and chromatin accessibility in airway epithelial cells after wood smoke particle (WSP) exposure. We used transcription factor enrichment analysis to identify temporally distinct roles for ternary response ...

Summary –The prevalence of urological symptoms in elderly males in the community is poorly documented. A series of 578 men, aged 60 to 85 years and registered with one inner city health centre, completed a self‐administered questionnaire which enquired about current urological symptoms. Many symptoms were common, including a lengthening of the time to pass urine (26%), a deterioration in urinary flow (30%), dribbling (26%), urgency (31%), increased day‐time frequency (32%) and nocturia (57%); 102 men (18%) ...
