Rose McCabe, Ethel Quayle, ANTHONY D. BEIRNE, MARGARET M. ANNE DUANE,

It is proposed that poor insight in schizophrenia may be explained by neuropsychological dysfunction and linked to the negative syndrome, which in turn may be related to structural neurological impairment. This study tested the hypothesis that poor insight is related to global neuropsychological impairment and negative symptoms in 89 patients with chronic schizophrenia. No significant association was found between total insight and cognitive impairment. When the dimensions of insight-treatment compliance, ...

Abstract Human neutrophils possess a very short half-life because they constitutively undergo apoptosis. Cytokines, such as granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), and other agents can rescue neutrophils from apoptosis but the molecular mechanisms involved in this rescue are undefined. Here, we show by Western blotting that human neutrophils do not express Bcl-2 or Bcl-X but constitutively express Bax. However, cellular levels of these proteins are unaffected by agents which either ...

Summary A case of peritonitis secondary to the perforation of a bronchogenic small bowel metastasis is reported. To our knowledge this is only the fourth case in which peritonitis was the presenting feature of a squamous cell carcinoma of the bronchus. The publications to date are reviewed and the need to biopsy every small bowel perforation found at laparotomy is stressed.

Current work on insight focuses on its assessment, a trend that is reflected in the inflation of newly-developed scales. Most scales assess compliance with treatment, recognition and acceptance of mental illness and relabeling of abnormal mental experience as pathological. A handful of studies indicate that compliance is weakly to moderately correlated with awareness of illness and relabelling of symptoms in acute samples. As the parameters of compliance differ between acute and chronic populations, ...

Background The previous paper reports a high prevalence of schizophrenia (broad definition) in an inner London area. In this paper we test hypotheses for this finding and examine the characteristics of people with schizophrenia who move frequently. Method People with schizophrenia in the Hampstead area were identified by key informant methodology, at two censuses five years apart. This allowed identification of incident cases during these five years and identification of people who had moved into ...

Dale Moulding, Julie A. Quayle, Rebecca E. Stringer, C. Anthony Hart, Steven W. Edwards,

Neutrophils have a very short half life because they constitutively undergo apoptosis. Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) can delay apoptosis, but this agent also primes functions such as the respiratory burst and receptor upregulation. Here, we show that sodium butyrate, which has been shown to increase gene expression and differentiation in a variety of cell types, is more effective than GM-CSF in delaying neutrophil apoptosis. Thus, sodium butyrate preserves cell morphology ...

Minimum concentrations for the inhibition of normal chlamydial inclusions (MICN) and abnormal inclusions (MICA) were obtained for a range of antimicrobials titrated against Chlamydia trachomatis in McCoy cell cultures. Each antibiotic titrated produced an MICN which was the same whether examined by Giemsa or fluorescent antibody staining methods (nfampicin 0007 mg/1, tetracycline, erythromycin and penicillin 0–062 mg/1, chloramphenicol and spiramycin 0-25 mg/1, ciprofloxacin 10 mg/1, and cycloserine ...

Philadelphia chromosome-positive (Ph+) B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) expressing BCR-ABL1 oncoprotein is a major subclass of ALL with poor prognosis. BCR-ABL1-expressing leukemic cells are highly dependent on double-strand break (DSB) repair signals for their survival. Here we report that a first-in-class HDAC1,2 selective inhibitor and doxorubicin (a hyper-CVAD chemotherapy regimen component) impair DSB repair networks in Ph+ B-cell precursor ALL cells using common as well as distinct ...
