Identification of patient sub-groups with smoldering multiple myeloma (SMM) at high risk of progression to active disease (MM) is an important goal. 18F-FDG PET/CT (positron emission tomography (PET) integrated with computed tomography (PET/CT) using glucose labelled with the positron-emitting radionuclide 18F) allows for assessing early skeletal involvement. Identification of osteolytic lesions by this technique has recently been incorporated into the updated International Myeloma Working Group criteria ...

Targeted radioimmunotherapy with 90 Y-labeled ibritumomab tiuxetan is a novel therapeutic approach for CD20-positive relapsed or refractory non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). Methods: Seven consecutive patients with CD20-positive aggressive NHL who did not fully respond to prior myeloablative chemotherapy were enrolled. A 14.8 MBq (0.4 mCi)/kg dose of 90 Y-ibritumomab tiuxetan was administered to all patients, and approximately 100 d afterward 18 F-FDG PET/CT was performed to assess response. Results: PET/ ...

This paper discusses research on gypsum decorated ceilings of Piemonte. They are a precious architectural and rural cultural heritage and are extremely delicate and fragile due to the material characteristics. Some examples of these ceilings date as far back as the late16th century and the earliest examples were made near the end of the 19th century. Apparently similar to wooden coffered ceilings, the gypsum panels in these ceilings have a bearing function together with the wooden framework and ...

Background Usefulness of iron chelation therapy in myelodysplastic patients is still under debate but many authors suggest its possible role in improving survival of low-risk myelodysplastic patients. Several reports have described an unexpected effect of iron chelators, such as an improvement in hemoglobin levels, in patients affected by myelodysplastic syndromes. Furthermore, the novel chelator deferasirox induces a similar improvement more rapidly. Nuclear factor-κB is a key regulator of many ...

Primary plasma cell leukemia (PPCL) is a rare and aggressive plasma cell disorder. The use of novel agents, together with autologous stem cell transplantation, has improved survival outcome in PPCL. However, the prognosis is still very poor, and the optimal treatment remains an unmet clinical need.We studied the efficacy and prognostic impact of novel agents in 46 patients with PPCL patients at the Blood Diseases Hospital in China. We examined the impact of clinical and laboratory features, as well ...

Liposomes are amphipathic lipidic supramolecular aggregates that are able to encapsulate and carry molecules of both hydrophilic and hydrophobic nature. They have been widely used as in vivo drug delivery systems for some time because they offer features such as synthetic flexibility, biodegradability, biocompatibility, low immunogenicity, and negligible toxicity. In recent years, the chemical modification of liposomes has paved the way to the development of smart liposome-based drug delivery systems, ...

Background: CD20 antigen down-modulation by anti-CD20 rituximab treatment is a well-recognized phenomenon in patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. However, few data are currently available on this topic in other lymphoproliferative disorders, in particular in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Objective: The aim of this study was to establish how many patients with CLL show a disappearance of CD20 antigen after salvage treatment with rituximab and its possible clinical significance. Methods: We ...

Dual functionalized liposomes were developed to cross the blood−brain barrier (BBB) and to release their cargo in a pathological matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-rich microenvironment. Liposomes were surface-functionalized with a modified peptide deriving from the receptor-binding domain of apolipoprotein E (mApoE), known to promote cargo delivery to the brain across the BBB in vitro and in vivo; and with an MMP-sensitive moiety for an MMP-triggered drug release. Different MMP-sensitive peptides were ...

Analysis of fatty acid in intestinal mucosa brush border suggested that an increase in unsaturated fatty acid could be a mechanism for the preservation of cell membrane integrity and functionality. Nuclear blebs are herniations of the nucleus that occur in diseased nuclei that cause nuclear rupture leading to cellular dysfunction. Chromatin and lamins are two of the major structural components of the nucleus that maintain its shape and function, but their relative roles in nuclear blebbing remain elusive. To determine the composition of nuclear blebs, we compared the immunofluorescence intensity of DNA and lamin B in the main nucleus body to the nuclear bleb across cell types and perturbations. ...

Abstract Preliminary evidence supports the notion that COVID-19 patients may have an increased susceptibility to develop venous thromboembolism (VTE). However, the magnitude of this association still needs to be defined. Furthermore, clinical predictors of thrombogenesis, and the relationship with the inflammatory status are currently unknown. On this basis, we conducted a retrospective, observational study on 259 consecutive COVID-19 patients admitted to an academic tertiary referral hospital in ...
