The genome sequence of Leifsonia xyli subsp. xyli, which causes ratoon stunting disease and affects sugarcane worldwide, was determined. The single circular chromosome of Leifsonia xyli subsp. xyli CTCB07 was 2.6 Mb in length with a GC content of 68% and 2,044 predicted open reading frames. The analysis also revealed 307 predicted pseudogenes, which is more than any bacterial plant pathogen sequenced to date. Many of these pseudogenes, if functional, would likely be involved in the degradation of ...

Abstract Over 40,000 sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) consensus sequences assembled from 237,954 expressed sequence tags were compared with the protein and DNA sequences from other angiosperms, including the genomes of Arabidopsis and rice (Oryza sativa). Approximately two-thirds of the sugarcane transcriptome have similar sequences in Arabidopsis. These sequences may represent a core set of proteins or protein domains that are conserved among monocots and eudicots and probably encode for essential ...

The VIRGO Central Interferometer (CITF) is a short suspended interferometer operated with the central area elements of the VIRGO detector. The main motivation behind the CITF is to allow the integration and debugging of a large part of the subsystems of VIRGO while the construction of the long arms of the antenna is being completed. This will permit a faster commissioning of the full-size antenna. In fact, almost all the main components of the CITF, with the exception of the large mirrors and a few ...

[structure: see text] Two-step syntheses of triple-bridged triscationic bicyclophanes are presented. Molecular modeling has been undertaken by means of ab initio calculations (6-31G level) on the triquinolina triscationic bicyclophane. This compound exists as two diastereomeric sets of enantiomers, one with C3 symmetry and the other with C1 symmetry. The C3-symmetrical derivative is 1.94 kcal mol(-1) more stable than its C1-symmetrical one. This energy difference is sufficient to consider the former ...

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) applications are limited by the low penetration of UV–visible light into biological tissues. Considering X-rays as an alternative to excite photosensitizers (PS) in a deeper tumor, an intermediate particle able to convert the X-ray energy into visible light (scintillating nanoparticle, ScNP) is necessary. Moreover, accumulation of PS in the target cells is also required. Genetically encoded proteins could be used as a photosensitizer, allowing the exclusive expression of ...

Biomass-based materials present low sorption capacity. In order to overcome this disadvantage, chemical modification of these materials is required. Hybrids of biomass-based materials were obtained by reacting (25%-200% weight) 3-aminopropyl-triethoxysilane (APTES) with the biomass Ayous wood sawdust (AW), obtaining the hybrid materials [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], and [email protected], that were characterized by hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance, CHN elemental ...

In this work, an extended version of a quasichemical thermodynamic model is presented. The swelling behavior of crosslinked acrylamide polymer gels and N-substituted derivatives, such as N-isopropylacrylamide and N-tert-butylacrylamide has been compared to predictions from such model which takes into account the specific hydrogen bonding interactions encountered in these systems. The calculated volume transition temperature of the poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) gel is 0.8 °C lower than the experimental ...

The biosorption of food dyes FD&C red no. 40 and acid blue 9 onto Spirulina platensis nanoparticles was studied at different conditions of pH and temperature. Four isotherm models were used to evaluate the biosorption equilibrium and the thermodynamic parameters were estimated. Infra red analysis (FT-IR) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were used to verify the biosorption behavior. The maximum biosorption capacities of FD&C red no. 40 and acid blue 9 were found at pH 4 and 298 K, and ...
