Abstract When an artificial neural network is used to determine the value of a physical quantity its result is usually presented without an uncertainty. This is due to the difficulty in determining the uncertainties related to the neural model. However, the result of a measurement can be considered valid only with its respective measurement uncertainty. Therefore, this article proposes a method of obtaining reliable results by measuring systems that use artificial neural networks. For this, it considers ...

Abstract Hydrogels are biocompatible soft materials that resemble biological tissues more than any other material. However, the use of these systems in soft robotics has been limited to aqueous environments. In the work published to date, hydrogels have relied on external water to swell or shrink in response to stimuli and, therefore, to actuate macroscopically. In the work reported here, this limitation is overcome by synthesizing a novel type of electroactive hydrogels capable of actuating when ...

Mimicking nature's self-healing ability has always been desired in science, especially when devices accumulate damage over time with performance, including the loss of function due to deterioration. SHAP (Self-Healing AETA([2-(acryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium chloride)-based Polymer), a hydrogel with autonomous self-healing ability that can be applied for the development of a pneumatic artificial muscle, is presented here. Unlike other self-healing hydrogels, SHAP does not require any external ...

We report 2 cases of patients with immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) associated with cutaneous disseminated sporotrichosis and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) coinfection. The patients received specific treatment for sporotrichosis. However, after 4 and 5 weeks from the beginning of antiretroviral therapy, both patients experienced clinical exacerbation of skin lesions despite increased T CD4+ cells (T cells cluster of differentiation 4 positive) count and decreased viral load. ...

Arterial spin labeling (ASL) is an emerging noninvasive MRI technique for assessing cerebral perfusion. An important advantage of ASL perfusion is the lack of a requirement for an exogenous tracer. ASL uses magnetically labeled water protons from arterial blood as an endogenous diffusible tracer. For this reason, ASL is an attractive perfusion imaging modality for children and for patients with contraindications or adverse reactions to gadolinium, patients with renal failure, and those who need repeated ...

During the first hours after stroke onset, neurological deficits can be highly unstable: some patients rapidly improve, while others deteriorate. This early neurological instability has a major impact on long-term outcome. Here, we aimed to determine the genetic architecture of early neurological instability measured by the difference between the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) within 6 h of stroke onset and NIHSS at 24 h. A total of 5876 individuals from seven countries (Spain, ...

The process of carbon dioxide (CO2) absorption is analyzed at high partial pressures, in aqueous solutions of di-isopropanolamine (DIPA). The experiments were performed in a stirred tank reactor with a planar and known interfacial area. The variables considered were the DIPA concentration (within a range of 0.0413−1.90 kmol/m3) and the temperature (within an interval of 288−313 K). From the results, we deduce that the absorption process occurs in a moderately fast reaction regime with a second-order ...

Abstract In this work, the process of carbon dioxide absorption is analyzed at high partial pressures, in aqueous solutions of 2‐amino‐2‐methyl‐1‐propanol (AMP), with respect to the thermal effects involved. The experiments were carried out in a stirred tank reactor with a plane and known interfacial area. The variables considered were the AMP concentration and the temperature, within the ranges 0.1–3.0 kmol/m 3 and 288–313 K, respectively. From the results, we deduce that the absorption process ...

Three cases of Trypanosoma cruzi-HIV co-infected haemophiliacs are described. Parasitological (xenodiagnosis, haemoculture, PCR) and immunological (CD4+ and CD8+ T cell counts, in vitro lymphoproliferative responses) studies were performed. Hybridization of isolated parasites with a specific probe confirmed the T. cruzi aetiology. We observed that despite the high parasitaemia, no clinical or parasitological evidence of T. cruzi reactivation was detected. CD4+ T cells decreased with time in two patients ...

ABSTRACT Although much attention has been paid to patients who lack insight into their obsessional beliefs, less importance has been given to individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) who display perceptual disturbances typically found in psychotic disorders, including schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorders, or mood disorders with psychotic features. Because an unbalanced diet is an important risk factor for several illnesses, interest has increased in finding novel health-promoting foods. Amaranth produces seeds that not only have substantial nutritional properties but that also contain phytochemical compounds as rutin and nicotiflorin and peptides with antihypertensive and anticarcinogenic activities. We report that a cancer-preventive peptide in amaranth has activities similar to those of soybean lunasin. The amaranth lunasin-like peptide, ...

Abstract Roots are the primary sites of water stress perception in plants. The aim of this work was to study differential expression of proteins and transcripts in amaranth roots ( Amaranthus hypochondriacus L.) when the plants were grown under drought stress. Changes in protein abundance within the roots were examined using two‐dimensional electrophoresis and LC/ESI‐MS/MS, and the differential expression of transcripts was evaluated with suppression subtractive hybridisation (SSH). Induction of drought ...

The first full scale application of a movable scaffolding system strengthened with an organic prestressing system (OPS) is briefly described. The varied macro- and micro-vertebrate fauna include carnivores, herbivores and rodents, as well as reptiles and amphibians, suggesting an Early Pleistocene age. The taphonomic study of the fauna discovered on the site is underway.

The major histocompatibility complex class I genes comprise a bunch of classical genes (A, B, C), non-classical genes (E, F and G), pseudogenes and truncated genes. MHC-E, -F and -G are now considered immune “tolerization” molecules, which not only interact with NK cells but with T lymphocyte subsets and other cells and have a role in fetus acceptation. A strong positive directional selection is acting for maintaining the observed low polymorphism on E, F and G loci in human and apes. Invariance must ...

Adiponectin is a member of the family of adipose tissue-related hormones known as adipokines, which exerts antidiabetic, antiatherogenic, antiinflammatory, and antiangiogenic properties. Adiponectin actions are primarily mediated through binding to two receptors expressed in several tissues, AdipoR1 and AdipoR2. Likewise, adiponectin expression has been detected in adipocytes as well as in a variety of extra-adipose tissues, including the chicken pituitary. Interestingly, adiponectin secretion and ...
