Mediterranean container ports are constantly requested to face new market challenges after years of decline of their traffic in favour of a stronger leadership of Northern range ports, also favoured by the consolidation of the Arctic Route and the Belt and Road Initiative. To regain competitiveness, Mediterranean ports must undertake a path of operational, managerial and infrastructural strengthening. This study applies Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to 35 Mediterranean container ports in order ...

The docking protein p140Cap negatively regulates tumour cell features. Its relevance on breast cancer patient survival, as well as its ability to counteract relevant cancer signalling pathways, are not fully understood. Here we report that in patients with ERBB2-amplified breast cancer, a p140Cap-positive status associates with a significantly lower probability of developing a distant event, and a clear difference in survival. p140Cap dampens ERBB2-positive tumour cell progression, impairing tumour ...

This review outlines and discusses the new challenges in malaria control and prospects for its elimination in Mutare and Mutasa Districts, Zimbabwe. The burden of malaria has declined significantly over the past 5 years in most regions in Zimbabwe, including Mutare and Mutasa Districts. The nationwide malaria reduction has been primarily linked to scaled-up vector control interventions and early diagnosis and treatment with effective anti-malarial medicines. The successes recorded have prompted ...

Insecticide resistance in major malaria vectors poses severe challenges for stakeholders responsible for controlling the disease. During the 2013/14 season, malaria vector sentinel sites in Mutare and Mutasa Districts, Zimbabwe, experienced high presence of gravid malaria vector mosquitoes resting indoors in recently pyrethroid-sprayed structures. Subsequently, an evaluation of insecticide resistance in Anopheles funestus populations, the major malaria vector, was conducted to better inform the ...

Defining the anopheline mosquito vectors and their foraging behaviour in malaria endemic areas is crucial for disease control and surveillance. The standard protocol for molecular identification of host blood meals in mosquitoes is to morphologically identify fed mosquitoes and then perform polymerase chain reaction (PCR), precipitin tests, or ELISA assays. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which the feeding rate and human blood indices (HBIs) of malaria vectors were underestimated ...

Two mitochondrial DNA clades have been described in Anopheles funestus populations from southern Africa. Clade I is common across the continent while clade II is known only from Mozambique and Madagascar. The specific biological status of these clades is at present unknown. We investigated the possible role that each clade might play in the transmission of Plasmodium falciparum and the insecticide resistance status of An. funestus from Zimbabwe and Zambia.Mosquitoes were collected inside houses ...

Protein phosphorylation tightly regulates specific binding of effector proteins that control many diverse biological functions of cells (e. g. signaling, migration and proliferation). p140Cap is an adaptor protein, specifically expressed in brain, testis and epithelial cells, that undergoes phosphorylation and tunes its interactions with other regulatory molecules via post-translation modification. In this work, using mass spectrometry, we found that p140Cap is in vivo phosphorylated on tyrosine ( ...

Integrin signaling has a critical function in organizing cells in tissues during both embryonic development and tissue repair. Following their binding to the extracellular ligands, the intracellular signaling pathways triggered by integrins are directed to two major functions: organization of the actin cytoskeleton and regulation of cell behaviour including survival, differentiation and growth. Basic research conducted in the past twelve years has lead to remarkable breakthroughs in this field. ...

Following the discovery of two CB1 genes in the fish Fugu rubripes, investigations on the phylogeny of endocannabinoids have indicated that this system is highly conserved. Our study demonstrated that CB1 receptors are expressed in the CNS and gonads of two teleosts, Carassius auratus and Pelvicachromis pulcher, and they show a high percentage of sequence identity with Fugu rubripes CB(1A) and Danio rerio CB1. By means of immunohistochemistry for CB1, sGnRH, and TH, we found a codistribution of ...

The effect of γ-ray collimation geometry in measuring Mössbauer absorption spectra is studied quantitatively. It is found that the spectra undergo an expansion around zero velocity and the more the collimator allows high flows of γ-rays, the more important is the expansion. Equations are proposed to correct for this effect.

The main features of a self-modulating derivative densitometer as well as some typical results of the new method are reported. By comparing both derivative and nonderivative analysis of a spectrum conventionally recorded on a spectrographic plate, one can see that its detectability is increased by a factor much greater than 1. These experimental results are consistent with the gain to be expected by means of optical derivative spectroscopy.

Removal of chloroquine from national malaria formularies can lead to the reversion of resistant Plasmodium falciparum to wild-type. We report a steep decline in chloroquine-resistant P falciparum within 10 years of national discontinuation of chloroquine monotherapy in Zimbabwe. Drug resistance surveillance is a vital component of malaria control programs, and the experience with chloroquine in Zimbabwe and elsewhere in sub-Saharan Africa is illustrative of the potentially rapid and dramatic impact ...

Abstract The thermoluminescent emissions of some aromatic hydrocarbon crystals have been investigated as excited at liquid N 2 temperature by UV light. Diffuse scattering measurements have been also performed for determining the absorption and excitation spectra. The results are interpreted on the basis of a kinetic model, which accounts for the photoluminescent properties too. Evidence is obtained as to the effect of the molecular structure on the thermoluminescent emission efficiency.

The problem of the thermoluminescence building-up, that is of the carrier production and storage during the phosphor excitation, is faced by the same kinetic model which allows for the thermoluminescent emission, that is, for the carrier recombinations. Equations are given suited to perform quantitative comparisons with the experiment. Measurements on ZnS and AgCl crystals show the reliability of the model and yield values for the ratio of retrapping to recombination probabilities in agreement with ...

Two instruments are described suited for recording thermoluminescent glow spectra respectively below and above room temperature. Their most remarkable property is the fact that the samples are kept under vacuum. Thermal insulation, thus, is good enough to allow samples to be placed only 15 mm from the light detector, even if they are heated up to 500 °C or cooled down to liquid N2 temp. Consequently, the light collection efficiency turns out to be very high. These instruments are equipped with both ...

The thermoluminescent emissions of AgCl and AgBr crystals have been investigated as excited at liquid N2 temperature with UV light. The spectra of both halides were found to exhibit a single glow peak, with maxima at 140 and 124 ° K respectively. Analysis of the data yields an activation energy of 0.13 eV for AgCl and 0.096 for AgBr. The trapping centres are identified with Frenkel defects and evidence is obtained in favour of the carrier trap situation presupposed by the Mitchell and Mott model for ...

The thermoluminescence glow spectra of ortho, meta and para-hydroxy and aminobenzoic acids have been investigated as obtained through UV excitation at low temperature. The trap depths are found to range from 0.13-0.39 eV for the various acids, while the trap density turns out to be highest in the ortho-forms. This feature is ascribed to the poorer stability of the dimers in the ortho-acids, which produces a larger concentration of lattice defects. This conclusion is substantiated by means of different ...

Abstract Background Microscopy and rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) are the main techniques used to diagnose malaria. While microscopy is considered the gold standard, RDTs have established popularity as they allow for rapid diagnosis with minimal technical skills.
