The present list of Polychætes is a revision of the list published in 1904, as part of the general list of the Plymouth Marine Invertebrate Fauna ( Journ. Mar. Biol. Assoc. , vol. vii., 1904, p. 219). It is the result of work carried on in the intervals of other researches, as opportunity offered, and there are in all probability a good many gaps still to be filled.

Because of the small size and sporadic occurrence of archiannelids, the genus Dinophilus has received scant attention in this country. D. pygmaeus was studied by Verrill in 1892 from New England, but due to the inadequacy of the description, this species must be considered invalid. D. simplex, another form which Verrill considered as belonging to this genus has been transferred to the turbellarian genus Alaurina. D. gardineri was studied and reported on by Moore (1899) in a preliminary note. Ruebush ( ...

J. S. Gray,

Interstitial animals would, in general, be expected to avoid high light intensities, but surprisingly few experiments have been carried out to analyse their response to light. The interstitial archiannelids Nerilla antennata Schmidt (Goodrich 1912) and Trilobodrilus heideri Remane (Boaden 1963) have been shown to be strongly negative to light, accumulating in shaded areas. Nerilla exhibits a negative photokinesis, moving away from regions of high light intensity, whilst Trilobodrilus turns at random ...

Abstract Paranerilla limicola Jouin & Swedmark, originally described from the Swedish west coast at a depth of 50–70 m, is reported from the Norwegian coast (120–270 m) and the northern Adriatic (25 m). The hydroid, Boreohydra simplex Westblad, and the turbellarians, Diopisthoporus longitubus Westblad, Nemertoderma bathycola Steinböck, Gnosonesimila borealis Westblad, and Boreocelis filicauda Westblad, seem to be among the typical representatives of the associated fauna.

The littoral archiannelid Dinophilus gyrociliatus Schmidt 1857 is microphagous and feeds on bacteria, protozoa, unicellular algae, diatoms and organic detritus. Two types of feeding mechanisms are used and both are relatively unselective. In the first, suspended particles brought to the head in water currents set up by the beating of transverse ciliated bands are trapped in mucus and swept laterally and ventrally on to the under surface of the head, where further ciliary activity conveys them posteriorly ...
