Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related mortality worldwide. The Brazilian Society of Hepatology (SBH) published in 2015 its first recommendations about the management of HCC. Since then, new data have emerged in the literature, prompting the governing board of SBH to sponsor a single-topic meeting in August 2018 in São Paulo. All the invited experts were asked to make a systematic review of the literature reviewing the management of HCC in subjects with cirrhosis. ...

The analysis of numerous specimens referred to as Crossodactylus dispar A. Lutz, 1925 in the literature revealed the occurrence of many distinct forms under this name. We discovered that the syntypes belong to two different species, so we designate a lectotype for C. dispar and associate the paralectotypes with Calamobates boulengeri De Witte, 1930, currently a junior synonym of C. dispar and herein revalidated under the new combination Crossodactylus boulengeri. The full species status of Crossodactylus ...

The Oryzomyini is the most diverse tribe of the sigmodontine (Cricetidae: Sigmodontinae) radiation, including 28 genera and about 130 species, with this diversity reflected in the ecological and morphological variation observed among members. There are many hypotheses to explain the emergence and diversification of the Sigmodontinae in South America, including areas of original differentiation (AOD). In this paper we provide information on the geographic distribution of all extant genera in the tribe ...

An extensive review of Rhinella granulosa species group was conducted based on external morphological and morphometrical characteristics. Data set included 8700 specimens deposited in 35 collections, representing 865 localities, from South and Central America. Twelve species were recognized for the group, one described as new; they are: Rhinella granulosa (Northeastern Brazil), R. pygmaea (Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil), R. bergi (Paraguay, Northwestern Argentina, and Mato Grosso State, Brazil), R. ...

We examined external morphology and skeletal characters of Proceratophrys specimens with eyelid appendages to define species limits and distribution. Proceratophrys boiei occurs along the Atlantic Forest, from the State of Espírito Santo to the State of Santa Catarina, reaching transitional areas to the Cerrado, in the States of Minas Gerais and São Paulo, whose type-locality is Rio de Janeiro, not Bahia, as previously thought. Proceratophrys renalis is revalidated; its distribution comprises the ...

A synonymyc catalogue for the species of Neotropical Crabronidae and Sphecidae is presented, including all synonyms, geographical distribution and pertinent references. The catalogue includes 152 genera and 1834 species (1640 spp. in Crabronidae, 194 spp. in Sphecidae), plus 190 species recorded from Nearctic Mexico (168 spp. in Crabronidae, 22 spp. in Sphecidae). The former Sphecidae (sensu Menke, 1997 and auct.) is divided in two families: Crabronidae (Astatinae, Bembicinae, Crabroninae, Pemphredoninae ...

After a brief study of the main concepts of the intuitive set theory, formal definitions of taxon, morphospecies and eidophoront are given. Follows a critical study of the creation of the Linnaean categories and why they cannot be maintained, and of the three different meanings of «genos» in evolutionary taxonomy (C-genos, P-genos and inf (P-genos)). Then, a new system of nomenclature is proposed for phylogenetic systematics, in which, without ever creating new names, all the species and all the proper ...

The jaw apparatus of the Neotropical and of the Afrotropical species of the three subfamilies of woodpeckers are described and illustrated. Eighty five percent of the Afrotropical and about 60% of the Neotropical genera are represented. Campephilus rubricollis was used as the pattern on which these anatomical descriptions were based. The present study showed that there are more differences among the species of the three subfamilies than divergences between the Afrotropical and Neotropical groups. ...

The nature of the relationship among six species of Galbulidae was analysed in terms of cranial osteology, ligaments and myology of the jaw apparatus. A detailed description of G. ruficauda followed by a comparison with G. albirostris, G. galbula, G. cyanicollis, Brachygalba lugubris and Jacamerops aurea was made. This study showed a close relationship among the species of Galbula with Brachygalba lugubris; J. aurea, on the other hand, presented many differences mainly in osteological structures. ...

This revision includes comparative morphological analysis, biological data from various sources and a consideration of geographical distributions. The genus is considered to be a natural group, including 31 valid species, of which 13 are here described as new. The species are distributed in four groups, morphologically and behaviorally characterized; individual keys and distributional maps are given. All types were examined, except for that of M. bituberculatus (Fabricius, 1798), probably lost; the ...

Sixty-four species of wild mammals were recorded in deciduous forest, cerrado, and other vegetation types at Acurizal, a ranch located in the Pantanal area of southwestern Brazil. The total biomass of these species was about 380 kg/km² of which tapir contributed 25%, deer 22%, peccaries 15%, capybara 12%, edentates 8.5%, primates 5%, and carnivores 4%. Livestock had a biomass of over 3750 kg/km², a figure 10 times greater than that of the native mammals. The low biomass of wild mammals can be attributed ...
