Malignant mesothelioma (MM) is a tumor that is resistant to conventional therapy. Interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) has been used in the treatment of some human tumors, and we have previously demonstrated an in vitro anti-proliferative effect of IFN against MM cell lines. Therefore, the effect of recombinant human IFN-alpha (IFN-alpha 2a) (Roferon-A, Hoffmann-La Roche) on previously untreated patients with MM has been studied. Twenty-five patients (24 male and 1 female), with a mean age of 59 +/- 9.9 years, were ...

Control of competing vegetation in Christmas tree plantations is an important part of management, as uncontrolled weed growth can affect the growth and form of lower branches. Herbicide application is the most common weed-control strategy, but some Christmas tree growers prefer organic mulches. Although both herbicides and other weed-control strategies are available, there is little information about their effects on soil nutrients and microbial biomass, which determine long-term site productivity. ...

On this particular occasion there were only five of us: Lord Rutherford, Sir Arthur Eddington, Sir Maurice Amos (at one time, during the 1920s, the Chief Judicial Advisor to the Egyptian government), Dr Patrick Du Val (a distinguished geometer), and myself. After dinner, we all sat around a fire and everyone, except myself, was smoking long white clay pipes—a traditional English custom during Christmas. Rutherford was in great form and was naturally ...
