Hazel Gore, Arthur T. Hertig,

Carcinoma in situ of the endometrium is the name applied to a complex hyperplastic glandular pattern in the endometrium also labeled atypical hyperplasia or adenomatous hyperplasia. When these latter names are applied they are usually modified by “severe” or “marked.” This lesion is often followed by or accompanies definite adenocarcinoma. Indeed, the terms are sometimes applied to lesions already carcinoma! There is an accumulation of evidence to suggest that endometrial carcinoma is preceded by ...

The results of therapy in 16 patients with metastatic or nonmetastatic trophoblastic disease have been reported. Therapy consisted of chemotherapy alone or chemotherapy with indicated surgery carried out in the middle of a course of drug administration. Agents used were Methotrexate and actinomycin D. A complete remission rate of 75 per cent among 8 patients with metastatic trophoblastic disease and 100 per cent among 8 patients with nonmetastatic disease is recorded. The rationale and feasibility ...

Abstract Background Despite advances in therapy, outcome in many high‐grade pediatric central nervous system (CNS) tumors remains poor. The focus of neuro‐oncology research has thus turned towards identifying novel therapeutic targets. Poly(ADP‐ribose) polymerase‐1 (PARP1) is a DNA repair protein that has been studied in a variety of malignancies and may interfere with therapy‐induced DNA damage, however expression in pediatric CNS tumors is unknown. Procedure We evaluated PARP1 mRNA expression in ...

This review addresses recent advances in specific mechanisms of hepatotoxicity. Because of its unique metabolism and relationship to the gastrointestinal tract, the liver is an important target of the toxicity of drugs, xenobiotics, and oxidative stress. In cholestatic disease, endogenously generated bile acids produce hepatocellular apoptosis by stimulating Fas translocation from the cytoplasm to the plasma membrane where self-aggregation occurs to trigger apoptosis. Kupffer cell activation and ...

We reviewed urologic complications of 1183 consecutive primary or secondary renal transplants performed with bladder anastomoses at the University of Minnesota Hospital between 1985 and 1993. The Politano‐Leadbetter (PL) technique of ureteroneocystostomy was used in 410 patients; the multistitch (MS) extravesical technique modified from the methods of Witzel, Sampson, and Lich in 295; and the extravesical single‐stitch (SS) technique in 478. Urologic complications occurred in 81 patients (6.8%). Of ...

The purpose of our study was to analyze the accuracy of quantitative analysis of tumor vascularity on power Doppler sonograms in differentiating malignant and benign solid thyroid nodules using tumor histologic evaluation as the reference standard. Methods. Eighty-six solid thyroid tumors (46 malignant and 40 benign) in 56 consecutive patients (mean age +/- SD, 53.1 +/- 11.6 years; 12 male and 44 female) referred for the surgical treatment were included in our study. Visual and qualitative analysis of patterns ...

We have designed, analyzed, fabricated, and tested Schwarzschild multilayer X-ray microscopes. These instruments use flow-polished Zerodur mirror substrates which have been coated with multilayers optimized for maximum reflectivity at normal incidence at 135 A. They are being developed as prototypes for the Water Window Imaging X-Ray Microscope. Ultrasmooth mirror sets of hemlite grade sapphire have been fabricated and they are now being coated with multilayers to reflect soft X-rays at 38 A, within ...
