The investigational drug flavone-8-acetic acid (FAA) potently augments NK activity in the spleen, liver, lungs, and peritoneum in a dose-dependent manner after i.v. or i.p. administration. Augmented NK activity peaks by 24 h after FAA injection and returns to normal after 6 days. Combined treatment of established murine renal cancer with FAA and rIL-2 results in up to 80% long term survival whereas FAA or rIL-2 alone were unable to induce any long term survivors. The optimal dose of rIL-2 required ...

For this purpose, the course of fracture of the hip was compared in rehabilitated and nonrehabilitated patients matched for age, sex, socio-economic status, and prior disability. Deterioration in ambulation was more common in the nonrehabilitated patients. Severe deterioration in activities of daily living was also more frequent in the nonrehabilitated group. Extracts of the tendrils of Pisum sativum, Var. Alaska, exhibit adenosine triphosphatase activity which is inversely proportional to the amount the tendrils have coiled. The specific viscosity of the extract decreases when ATP is added. This evidence indicates a possible role of a contractile adenosine triphosphatase in coiling.

Excised pea (Pisum sativum L.) tendrils incubated in the light coil more than those incubated in the dark. This light effect, which displays spectral responses characteristic of chlorophyll-mediated mechanisms, is increased by at least 8 hours of prior dark incubation of plants from which the tendrils were derived. Considerable evidence indicates a major role of ATP in coiling. For example, inhibitors of ATP production decrease contact coiling. Exogenous ATP increases curvature in the dark, whereas ...

Unbranched tendrils arising from the fifth node of light grown Alaska pea plants were found to reach maturity at the age of 10 days. Such tendrils, when stroked, coiled rapidly. They remained maximally irritable for at least 3 days. Coiling was separable into 2 components, curvature (measured in degrees) and elongation. Coiling reached a maximum from one-half to 3 hours after tactile stimulation. This maximum is followed by a decrease, then by a further increase up to 48 hours. The optimum temperature ...

Ultrasound examination of small cysts in vivo and in vitro has demonstrated that several factors can interfere with recognition of their true anechoic nature. Reverberation and the effects of the beam width can interact with adjacent acoustic reflectors to produce artifactual echoes. Sonic enhancement in distal tissues varies with time gain compensation, frequency, and the position of the focal zone. If the operator is aware of this problem, he can compensate for these effects and thereby improve ...
