Background: Control of oral anticoagulant treatment has been reported to be suboptimal, but previous studies suggest that patient self-management improves control. Objective: To compare the quality of control and the clinical outcomes of oral anticoagulant treatment in self-managed patients versus patients following conventional management. Design: Randomized, controlled trial. Setting: University-affiliated hospital in Spain. Patients: 737 patients with indications for anticoagulant treatment. ...

We have developed a model to simulate clustered microcalcifications on digital mammograms. Wavelet transform techniques were used to detect real clustered microcalcifications. A feature analysis process was applied to automatically extract the features describing the individual simulated microcalcifications and clusters from the values of the real clustered microcalcifications present in the mammogram. Subsequently, a database of simulated and real clustered microcalcifications was created. Clusters ...

Purpose:This study assessed the risk associated with several schedules of perioperative treatment with coumadin in anticoagulated patients who underwent oral surgery. A prospective, randomized study compared bleeding complications with six perioperative schedules in 92 patients chronically treated with acenocoumarol. In three of the perioperative schedules, the dose was reduced before surgery and calcium heparin was added. In the other three, oral anticoagulation was not modified and heparin was ...

We propose a system to detect malignant masses on mammograms. We investigated the behavior of an iris filter at different scales. After iris filter was applied, suspicious regions were segmented by means of an adaptive threshold. Suspected regions were characterized with features based on the iris filter output and, gray level, texture, contour-related, and morphological features extracted from the image. A backpropagation neural network classifier was trained to reduce the number of false positives. ...

A computerized scheme to detect clustered microcalcifications in digital mammograms has been developed. Detection of individual microcalcifications in regions of interest (ROIs) was also performed. The mammograms were previously classified into fatty and dense, according to their breast tissue. The most appropriate wavelet basis and reconstruction levels were selected. To select the wavelet basis, 40 profiles of microcalcifications were decomposed and reconstructed using different types of wavelet ...

We investigated the prevalence of the new recently reported mutation in the prothrombin gene (20210 A) in a sample of 116 unrelated patients with venous thromboembolism. We found 20 heterozygous carriers (17.2%, CI 95% 10.4-21.1). In comparison, we observed 13 carriers among 201 healthy unmatched controls (6.5%, CI 3.5-10.8). The 20210 A mutation seems to increase the risk of venous thrombosis 3-fold (odds ratio 3.1, 95% CI 1.4-6.6). Considering only patients with a first event (n = 62) the OR was 2.0 ( ...

ABSTRACT Foods advertised were recorded in 2 television (TV) channels. The present article studies the association between products advertised and those consumed by mothers and children. A total of 365 mothers and their children were assessed. A positive correlation was observed between the food advertisements that the mothers recalled and the frequency of TV food advertisements (Rho = 0.44, P = 0.03). A positive correlation was found between the frequency of the foods advertised on TV and the consumption ...

Overweight and obesity have dramatically increased in recent years. In 2006, the prevalence of overweight and obesity among 6- to 12-year-old children was 26% in Mexico. Food advertising has shown to be a contributor to childhood obesity. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the frequency and types of food advertisements geared toward children living in Baja California. Two local channels and three national channels, during a period of 7 h on weekday afternoons and 6 h on weekend mornings, were ...

A computerized method to automatically detect malignant masses on digital mammograms based on bilateral subtraction to identify asymmetries between left and right breast images was developed. After the digitization, in order to align left and right mammograms the breast border and nipple were automatically detected. Images were corrected to avoid differences in brightness due to the recording procedure. Left and right mammograms were subtracted and a threshold was applied to obtain a binary image ...

Advances in the area of computerized image analysis applied to mammography may have very important practical applications in automatically detecting asymmetries (masses, architectural distortions, etc.) between the two breasts. We have developed a fully automatic technique to detect the breast border and the nipple, this being a necessary prerequisite for further image analysis. To detect the breast border, an algorithm that computes the gradient of gray levels was applied. To detect the nipple, ...

The cover picture shows the passivation effect of a liquid in a brass tube in the presence of oxygen in the gas phase. The resulting differential aeration conditions promote the passivation of brass at short exposure times as revealed in images recorded by alternating current scanning electrochemical microscopy (AC-SECM) which were generated by holding the SECM tip over the temporarily passivated area. Details are given in the Full Paper by Wolfgang Schuhmann et al. on page 49 in Issue 1, 2016 (DOI: ...

Abstract Our aim was to determine the associations of functional thrombin‐activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor (TAFI) levels in plasma with conventional cardiovascular risk factors, sex and age, and possible correlations with other hemostatic factors in a Spanish population. We included 303 individuals from a Spanish population. Hemostatic factors such as von Willebrand Factor, VII ag, VIIIc, XIc, XIIc, APCR, protein S, protein C, antithrombin, fibrinogen, and t‐PA antigen were assayed. The functional ...

Ischemic stroke (IS) is a complex disease that involves genetic and environmental factors. In a family-based study (the Genetic Analysis of Idiopathic Thrombophilia [GAIT] Project) that included a genome-wide scan, we demonstrated that a common polymorphism (46 C-->T) in the exon 1 of the F12 gene jointly influences variability of plasma Factor XII levels and susceptibility to thrombotic disease. We have investigated the risk of IS related to this polymorphism in a case-control study. We studied 436 ...

Recently, a novel procarboxypeptidase B-like proenzyme, called thrombin-activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor (TAFI), has been described. It plays an important role in the delicate balance between coagulation and fibrinolysis. TAFI leads to potent inhibition of tissue plasminogen activator-induced fibrinolysis. The relevance of TAFI in thromboembolic disease is unclear. We have investigated the risk of ischemic stroke (IS) in relation to plasma levels of functional TAFI.In a case-control study, we enrolled ...

Abstract The formation of a localized differential aeration cell on metals, susceptible to both anodic and cathodic corrosion, is a serious threat because of multiple degradation processes commencing with the passivation layer destruction. By using local electrochemical and X‐ray dispersive techniques, it has been demonstrated that the differential aeration cell formed on high brass (α‐brass, Cu65‐Zn35) in the presence of 1 H ‐benzotriazole or 5‐methyl‐1 H ‐benzotriazole plays both corrosion‐inhibiting ...
