Plant cell surface pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) and intracellular immune receptors cooperate to provide immunity to microbial infection. Both receptor families have coevolved at an accelerated rate, but the evolution and diversification of PRRs is poorly understood. We have isolated potato surface receptor Pep-13 receptor unit (PERU) that senses Pep-13, a conserved immunogenic peptide pattern from plant pathogenic

Abstract The early detection of congenital anomaly epidemics occurs when comparing current with previous frequencies in the same population. The success of epidemiologic surveillance depends on numerous factors, including the accuracy of the rates available in the base period, wide population coverage, and short periodicity of analysis. This study aims to describe the Latin American network of congenital malformation surveillance: ReLAMC, created to increase epidemiologic surveillance in Latin America. ...

In this study, 103 unrelated South-American patients with mucopolysaccharidosis type II (MPS II) were investigated aiming at the identification of iduronate-2-sulfatase (IDS) disease causing mutations and the possibility of some insights on the genotype–phenotype correlation The strategy used for genotyping involved the identification of the previously reported inversion/disruption of the IDS gene by PCR and screening for other mutations by PCR/SSCP. The exons with altered mobility on SSCP were sequenced, ...

Malawi is scaling-up provision of free antiretroviral therapy (ART) in the public sector. In the fourth quarter of 2004 and the first quarter of 2005, 3261 and 4530 new patients, respectively, were started on ART. Of these patients, approximately 40% were male and 95% were adults aged > or =13 years. The age group data show that women who accessed ART were in general 10 years younger than men. Between 84% and 90% of patients were started on ART because of being clinically assessed as being in WHO stages ...

ABSTRACT The Para Sight F test was developed as a pioneer industry effort in the large-scale, process-controlled production of a device for the rapid diagnosis of malaria. This device performed well in field settings but was limited to the detection of a single malaria species, Plasmodium falciparum. The Para Sight F+V assay advanced upon the Para Sight F test format by incorporating a monoclonal antibody directed against a proprietary Plasmodium vivax -specific antigen, in addition to the antibody ...

ABSTRACT Microscopic detection of parasites has been the reference standard for malaria diagnosis for decades. However, difficulty in maintaining required technical skills and infrastructure has spurred the development of several nonmicroscopic malaria rapid diagnostic devices based on the detection of malaria parasite antigen in whole blood. The Para Sight F test is one such device. It detects the presence of Plasmodium falciparum -specific histidine-rich protein 2 by using an antigen-capture immunochromatographic ...

Oomycetes form a phylogenetically distinct group of eukaryotic microorganisms that include some of the most notorious pathogens of plants and animals. Through the deployment of a remarkably diverse array of effector proteins, oomycete pathogens succeed to overcome host defences and cause infection. Effectors can operate extracellularly or enter living cells where they target diverse subcellular compartments. Genome sequence information indicates that oomycetes express several hundred host-translocating ...

Pattern-triggered immunity (PTI) in plants is mediated by cell surface-localized pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) upon perception of microbe-associated molecular pattern (MAMPs). MAMPs are conserved molecules across microbe species, or even kingdoms, and PRRs can confer broad-spectrum disease resistance. Pep-13/25 are well-characterized MAMPs in Phytophthora species, which are renowned devastating oomycete pathogens of potato and other plants, and for which genetic resistance is highly wanted. ...

The identification, understanding, and deployment of immune receptors are crucial to achieve high-level and durable resistance for crops against pathogens. In potato, many R genes have been identified using map-based cloning strategies. However, this is a challenging and laborious task that involves the development of a high number of molecular markers for the initial mapping, and the screening of thousands of plants for fine mapping. Bulked segregant RNA-Seq (BSR-Seq) has proven to be an efficient ...

The tumor suppressor gene TP53 is the most frequently mutated gene in human cancer, and the germline TP53 R337H mutation is the most common mutation reported to date. However, this mutation is associated with a lower cumulative lifetime cancer risk than other mutations in the p53 DNA-binding domain. A detailed statistical analysis of 171,500 DNA tests in Brazilian neonates found that 0.27% of the general population is positive for this mutation, and some of the estimated 200,000 Brazilian R337H ...
